\n\tAs Cond\u00e9 Nast announced its plans to fold media brand Teen Vogue<\/a> into Vogue.com<\/a> earlier today, the NewsGuild of New York and Cond\u00e9 Union said they \u201cstrongly condemn\u201d the merger and related layoffs<\/a>, slamming the decision as \u201ca move that is clearly designed to blunt the award-winning magazine\u2019s insightful journalism at a time when it is needed the most.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an editorial letter from the Vogue<\/a> business team, the flagship magazine maintained the \u201ctransition\u201d is \u201cpart of a broader push to expand the Vogue ecosystem,\u201d adding that the lauded publication \u2014 which caters to a young, progressive and politically attuned audience \u2014 \u201cwill remain a distinct editorial property, with its own identity and mission.\u201d The goal is to offer readers a \u201cmore unified\u201d experience across Cond\u00e9 Nast\u2019s titles, the statement read.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs a result, Chloe Malle<\/a>,\u00a0Vogue\u2019s head of editorial content, who was appointed to the role in September<\/a> following Anna Wintour\u2019s exit<\/a>, will now oversee\u00a0Teen Vogue. Previous editor-in-chief Versha Sharma will be departing the company.<\/p>\n

\n\tTeen Vogue\u2019s consolidation into Vogue.com follows\u00a0Vogue Business\u2019s move to the platform last week<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe are looking forward to this new chapter. In our increasingly fragmented media landscape, making all\u00a0Vogue\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Teen Vogue\u00a0and\u00a0Vogue Business\u00a0\u2014 accessible in one place sets us up for growth,\u201d Malle said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn response, Cond\u00e9 Union \u2014 organizing via NewsGuild, which also reps unions from The Atlantic, The Daily Beast, NBC News, The New York Times, New York Magazine and fellow Cond\u00e9 Nast subsidiaries like The New Yorker and Pitchfork \u2014 blasted the company\u2019s decision to lay off six employees, a majority of whom it said are employees with marginalized identities, continuing a \u201ctrend\u201d of firing members who are women, people of color, queer and\/or trans. One affected employee is Teen Vogue\u2018s politics editor, leaving the publication with no writers nor editors who cover the beat \u2014 ahead of what is likely to be a momentous grassroots-led victory for New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs of today, only one woman of color remains on the editorial staff at Teen Vogue. Cond\u00e9 leadership owes us \u2014 and Teen Vogue\u2019s readership \u2014 answers. We will get those answers. And we fight for our rights as workers with a collective bargaining agreement as we fight for the work we do, and the people we do it for,\u201d the union\u2019s statement concluded.<\/p>\n

\n\tLaunched in 2003 as a sister publication to Vogue, the formerly in-print outfit originally focused mainly on celebrity and fashion coverage aimed at young women and girls. Former EIC Elaine Welteroth, who was tapped in 2016, is largely credited with spearheading the site\u2019s foray into more in-depth political and social justice-oriented coverage.
