It’s a decision that has not been met with much excitement from the fanbase. It has also not yielded a lot of praise from sports media pundits who are having a hard time believing Brooklyn would pass on Darius Acuff, a dynamic weapon out of Arkansas who eventually went to the Sacramento Kings.

Things haven’t been great for the Brooklyn franchise for quite some time and this is being seen as yet another misstep. Meanwhile the organization that plays slightly west in Manhattan is on top of the basketball world for the first time since 1973. To add further insult, even non-sports fans understand that New York City came together as one during the Knicks’ incredible run, pushing the Nets closer to irrelevance.

Seeing that others had crushed Brooklyn, Schein went a step further and pressed the big red button to eliminate the franchise entirely.

“The Brooklyn Nets should fold the franchise,” Schein said. “Get out of the basketball business. Sell ice cream. Sell bicycles. Do something else. Clearly this organization has no idea what they’re doing. Get out of town. I don’t want to see the Brooklyn Nets in New York City ever again. They are an embarrassment to the NBA, to sports and to the great state of New York. This is a joke.”

Nets’ NBA draft decision fallout

Schein went on to claim that bringing Acuff to the borough would have been an instant box office bonanza and wondered how Nets general manager Sean Marks still has a job.

In doing so he flew dangerously close to the apex sports pundit take. Imploring a team to cease operations is pretty much as far as one can go. There’s little after that because if Brooklyn did pivot to ice cream or bike sales, there wouldn’t be much reason for them to be covered by sports networks. They would also probably move out of the Barclays Center because they wouldn’t need all that real estate.

There’s something so pure about jumping from “a team drafted the wrong guy” to “they must get out of the basketball business.” That’s why Schein has risen to the top of his field. The thought of him speaking for a bunch of New Yorkers made actively mad by the mere existence of the Nets is great. It’s an underserved constituency.

The only problem? Brown showed enough during his college years to make himself a lottery pick. Even the best-laid plans and most beloved prospects, like Acuff, can falter at the NBA level. If Brown somehow hits the ground running and Brooklyn returns to truly competitive ball over the next few years, this clip is going to age poorly. Though Nets fans are certainly not the most dominant voice online, every fanbase loves to see their team prove a pundit wrong.

Perhaps we’ll soon live in a world where fans are waving around ice cream cones and bike tires as a reminder of just how far Brooklyn has come.

Or Schein will be proven correct and the Nets will continue to exist despite the unheeded call to put them out of their misery.

The Brooklyn Nets selected Louisville’s Mikel Brown Jr. with the sixth pick in this year’s NBA draft.
