{"id":277899,"date":"2026-06-25T15:28:36","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T15:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/277899\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T15:28:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T15:28:36","slug":"manhattan-theatre-club-commissions-2-new-musicals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/277899\/","title":{"rendered":"Manhattan Theatre Club Commissions 2 New Musicals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/manhattan-theatre-club\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan Theatre Club<\/a> has commissioned two new musicals:\u00a0The Orange Grove and\u00a0It&#8217;s All Relative.<\/p>\n<p>The Orange Grove, featuring a book by <a data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/lindsey-ferrentino\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lindsey Ferrentino<\/a> (<a data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/production\/the-fear-of-13-broadway-james-earl-jones-theatre-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Fear of 13<\/a>,\u00a0<a data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/production\/the-queen-of-versailles-broadway-st-james-theatre-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Queen of Versailles<\/a>) and music by Samuel Beam, is a modern retelling of Chekhov&#8217;s\u00a0The Cherry Orchard, moving the story to a Florida orange grove.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s All Relative features a book by Sofya Levitsky-Weitz and music and lyrics by <a data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/benjamin-velez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Velez<\/a> (<a data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/production\/real-women-have-curves-broadway-james-earl-jones-theatre-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Real Women Have Curves<\/a>), centering on a gathering of friends called by Mileva Mari\u0107, the first wife and collaborator of Albert Einstein and a brilliant scientist in her own right.<\/p>\n<p>Both projects will get developmental residencies at Florida&#8217;s Hermitage Artist Retreat. Production timelines have not yet been established for these in-process works<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to commission these two brand-new musicals,\u201d says Artistic Director Nicki Hunter in a statement. \u201cOne of my hopes for MTC\u2019s future is that we can build upon our rich legacy as a home for new plays by also developing exciting world-premiere musicals.
