{"id":278056,"date":"2026-06-25T17:48:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T17:48:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/278056\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T17:48:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T17:48:07","slug":"mamdani-names-new-nonprofit-liaison-nbc-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/278056\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani names new nonprofit liaison \u2013 NBC New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor Zohran Mamdani has hired a new liaison to work with the hundreds of local nonprofits that will play a critical role in implementing his affordability agenda, delivering services from childcare to afterschool programs to anti-eviction services and homeless shelter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Annie Elisa Minguez will take over as executive director of the Mayor\u2019s Office of Nonprofit Services in July, a spokesperson for Mamdani confirmed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Annie\u00a0E.\u00a0Minguez has\u00a0spent her career fighting for the organizations and workers who deliver those essential services,\u201d Mamdani said in a statement.\u00a0\u201cHer leadership will help us build a stronger partnership between City government and nonprofits so that\u00a0together, we can better serve New Yorkers.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mamdani administration is announcing Minguez\u2019s appointment on Thursday, just two weeks after tensions with nonprofits flared over a City Hall proposal to delay roughly $3.7 billion in upfront payments to roughly 700 cash-strapped nonprofits with city contracts. The proposal to delay the payments\u00a0\u00a0&#8212; due on July 1, as per a new local law &#8212; was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/politics\/mamdani-comptroller-working-through-weekend-on-city-cash-crunch\/6512858\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">first reported by NBC New York.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/politics\/mamdani-administration-scraps-plan-to-delay-billions-to-nonprofits-amid-cash-flow-problem\/6513641\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mamdani pulled the plug on the payment delays <\/a>on June 15, one day before nonprofit groups planned to protest the proposed delays outside City Hall.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For decades, local nonprofits have struggled to collect their city funding on time and have had to take on expensive debt.\u00a0City Council leaders say they plan to hold a hearing on the proposal even though the Mamdani administration backed off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>City sources say the timing of Minguez\u2019s appointment is unrelated to the dust-up over payments in recent weeks and that plans were already underway to replace the prior director, Michael Sedillo. Sedillo was an Eric Adams holdover who announced his departure earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom housing to immigration to afterschool to early childhood education to child welfare to youth justice, nonprofits are the government partners at the forefront of ensuring New Yorkers thrive,\u201d Minguez said in a statement. \u00a0\u201cFor the last 12 years, I have seen\u00a0firsthand\u00a0how stagnant funding, cuts to essential programs, and changes in policies impact service delivery by the nonprofits that are\u00a0the backbone of communities tasked to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable New Yorkers,\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Minguez is a Bronx resident who was born and raised in Washington Heights\u00a0to Dominican immigrant parents. <\/p>\n<p>She has worked in federal government jobs and for more than a decade in local nonprofit leadership positions, advocating on behalf of programs that provide services to children and families at risk of violence, neglect, or foster care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Minguez\u2019s appointment drew praise from several local nonprofit leaders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Yanche, CEO of Good Shepherd Services, where Minguez most recently served as VP of Government and Community Relations, called Minguez \u201ca bold, creative thinker whose advocacy consistently moves the work forward.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Good Shepherd Services, a leading nonprofit, serving more than 30 thousand children and families in three boroughs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Jackson of the Human Services Council of New York said the nonprofit sector needs a fundamental reset in how the city partners with nonprofits to deliver quality services.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get paid late, but we also don\u2019t get paid enough. We underpay workers, so there\u2019s huge turnover,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We underfund the service itself, so is it really a quality service?\u00a0\u00a0And then we don\u2019t always check in with the sector to ask, &#8216;How is this service working?&#8217;\u201d\u00a0Jackson said, adding that she believes Minguez has the experience and knowledge needed to address these challenges. \u201cAnnie understands the issues\u00a0impacting\u00a0the sector and has been and will continue to be a fierce advocate for the people we serve,\u201d Jackson said.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani says he is committed to improving support for the city\u2019s nonprofit sector, which receives roughly $8 billion a year in city contracts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNonprofits\u00a0step in where the need is greatest.
