As cities across the country mark the milestone with expanded programming and civic celebrations, Brooklyn is doing things its own way.

Whether you’re looking for fireworks over the Atlantic, a frankly one-of-a-kind Coney Island tradition, or a history-filled outing with the family, Brooklyn has plenty on tap this Fourth of July. Here’s a roundup of some of the borough’s biggest Independence Day events.

Coney Island Fireworks

Brooklyn’s favorite seaside light show gets a patriotic upgrade this Independence Day. In addition to Coney Island’s free summer fireworks series, which takes place every Friday night through Aug. 28, the People’s Playground will host a special Fourth of July display at 9:45 p.m. on July 4.

The fireworks are launched from the beach near West 12th Street and can be viewed from the boardwalk, the beach or throughout the amusement district. For a bird’s-eye view, those feeling a bit more daring can watch from atop Deno’s Wonder Wheel. Arrive early with a beach chair or blanket, as the area tends to fill up quickly before showtime.

Thousands of people attend the hot dog eating contest every year.Photo courtesy of Paul Martinka/Nathan’s Famous
Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Championship

Nothing says Fourth of July in Brooklyn like a hot dog — and like watching the world’s best competitive eaters battle for the Mustard Belt.

The annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Championship returns to the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues on July 4, where defending champions Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo will look to hold onto their titles in front of thousands of spectators.

The contest has been a Coney Island tradition since 1916 and remains one of the borough’s most recognizable summer showdowns.
