Almost a year after its launch, Brooklyn Park authorities are reminding residents and business owners to participate in its safe community camera program. <\/p>\n
The Brooklyn Park Police Department launched , which allows community members register or share access to cameras during emergencies, in July of 2025. Authorities said both options are completely opt-in.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a system that many other cities also offer, including Minneapolis<\/a>, St. Paul<\/a> and Minnetonka<\/a>.<\/p>\n One option for residents is to register cameras for free, so Brooklyn Park authorities know where they are within the city. In that event, if a crime or emergency happens nearby, investigators from the police department can reach out and request video.<\/p>\n Officials said the camera registration gives first responders a tool to solve crimes quickly.<\/p>\n RELATED: Home cameras helping solve crimes in Brooklyn Park<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cThis saves an incredible amount of time for officers and investigators in the event of a crime or missing child,\u201d said Brooklyn Park Police Officer Matt Rabe. \u201cWe see this as a phenomenal opportunity to provide greater public safety to places like schools.\u201d<\/p>\n Another part of the program is camera integration, which involves installing a specific device from Axon FususCORE<\/a> to give authorities real-time access to cameras. Brooklyn Park officials said this part of the program focuses on businesses and public entities, where business owners define access controls.<\/p>\n \u201cThe owner can define when we have access, if the camera shows only a live feed, if we can see recorded video, etc.,\u201d said Rabe. \u201cIt\u2019s so granular that they can set the system to only provide access in the event of a 911 call at the location.\u201d<\/p>\n A year ago, Brooklyn Park Police told 5 EYEWTINESS NEWS the importance of having the program was during the search for Vance Boelter, the man who killed Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and shot Sen.
