{"id":279226,"date":"2026-06-26T19:31:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T19:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/279226\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T19:31:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T19:31:12","slug":"greenpoints-monitor-point-approved-by-council-subcommittee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/279226\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpoint\u2019s Monitor Point approved by Council subcommittee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GREENPOINT \u2014 A CITY COUNCIL SUBCOMMITTEE on Thursday voted 9-0 to <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/press\/2026\/06\/25\/3146\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">approve<\/a> the controversial Monitor Point project in Greenpoint after Councilmember Lincoln Restler negotiated an increase in affordable housing in return for his support. The full City Council vote will take place next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monitorpointonquay.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">project<\/a> consists of two waterfront towers hosting 1,324 new units and a museum for the USS Monitor. In a joint statement, Speaker Julie Menin and Restler said the Land Use Committee approved the proposal after the share of permanently affordable housing was upped from 25% to 50%. The subcommittee also secured a commitment from the Mamdani administration \u201cto finally complete the long-promised Bushwick Inlet Park,\u201d Menin and Restler said.<\/p>\n<p>Other commitments include construction funding for the Greenpoint Monitor Museum; the relocation of two MTA facilities; $300,000 annually for the long-term maintenance of Bushwick Inlet Park; and roughly one acre of waterfront open space connecting the Greenpoint waterfront and Bushwick Inlet Park.<\/p>\n<p>The project had split area residents. Among other issues, <a href=\"https:\/\/brooklyneagle.com\/387637\/bushwick-inlet-tower-project-approved-by-city-planning-commission\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">environmental groups<\/a> raised concerns about the effects of the towers on the inlet\u2019s ecosystem.
