WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump joked Friday that he could be \u201cthe greatest communist in history\u201d as he blasted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s newly approved rent freeze<\/a> and a trio of socialist triumphs<\/a> in House primary elections.<\/p>\n

Trump said barring the owners of nearly one million rent-stabilized apartments from charging tenants more money for two years\u00a0 \u2014 approved Thursday by the city\u2019s Rent Guidelines Board \u2014 would lead to ruin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be honest, I think I\u2019d be the greatest communist in history,\u201d Trump joked to religious conservatives at the Faith & Freedom Coalition\u2019s \u201cRoad to Majority\u201d conference following Mamdani\u2019s week of policy<\/a> and political wins.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem is, after two or three years, the country is a disaster area. The country fails,\u201d Trump said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAlways so easy to sell that first year, you\u2019re the most popular \u2026 but you\u2019ll start living in squalor.\u201d<\/p>\n

The populist president and socialist mayor struck up an unlikely friendship<\/a> last year, but Trump said Friday that the rent freeze is poised to turn his hometown into \u201cghettos and slums.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump made the comments during an attack on NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, NY Democratic primary winners linked to the DSA who the president said \u201cwant to completely destroy the traditional American way of life.\u201d AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n

\u201c[Mamdani] said he was going to do this in his campaign, but nobody thought he was serious,\u201d said the billionaire real estate developer turned chief executive.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the mayor doesn\u2019t say is that these buildings will soon turn into ghettos and slums and that everybody will continue leaving New York,\u201d Trump predicted.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd as this spreads throughout the country, very much like an uncontrollable form of cancer, the country itself will be taken down. It will be Third World \u2014 strictly Third World.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump called the freeze unfair to landlords due to<\/a> \u201cthe fact that energy, supplies, real estate taxes and just about everything else has gone up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re basically confiscating their property,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Trump also said victories by three Mamdani allies in House primaries on Tuesday should concern his religious conservative audience. Two of the winners are part of the Democratic Socialists of America,\u00a0and the third is a former\u00a0DSA member.<\/p>\n
