NEW YORK, June 29 (Reuters) \u2013 Luigi Mangione, the man accused of fatally shooting a health insurance executive on a Manhattan sidewalk in 2024, is due \u200bfor a hearing in federal court on Monday ahead \u200cof his federal trial on stalking charges after murder and weapons charges were thrown out.<\/p>\n
Mangione, 28, is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a hotel in Midtown.<\/p>\n
The shooting was condemned by public officials but became \u200cemblematic \u200bof the frustration felt by many \u2060Americans concerning rising healthcare costs \u2060and health insurance industry practices.<\/p>\n
Mangione has pleaded not guilty in the federal case ahead of his trial scheduled for November before U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett in Manhattan. Mangione \u200bstill faces murder charges brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in New York state court.<\/p>\n
At Monday\u2019s hearing, the parties \u2060are expected to discuss jury selection \u2060and scheduling matters.<\/p>\n
Garnett in January threw out the \u200bmurder and weapons charges over legal technicalities. The ruling foreclosed a \u200bpossible death penalty for Mangione, though he could still \u200cface a life sentence if convicted of stalking in the federal trial. Capital punishment would have been a possibility in a federal trial on murder charges, but it is not used under \u2060New York state law.<\/p>\n
Thompson led UnitedHealth Group\u2019s insurance unit before he was slain in the early morning outside a hotel where an \u2060investor conference was taking \u200cplace.\u00a0Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania after a \u2060five-day manhunt.<\/p>\n
Some critics of the health insurance industry \u200bhave \u200csupported Mangione by raising money for his legal \u200bdefense and \u2060attending his court appearances in solidarity.<\/p>\n
Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the state murder, weapons and forgery charges brought by Bragg. His trial in that case is set for September before Justice Gregory Carro in Manhattan.<\/p>\n
