NEW YORK \u2014 Gov. Kathy Hochul is continuing to bankroll New York City\u2019s major childcare expansion, with $19 million in capital grants awarded on Tuesday to eight \u201cshovel-ready\u201d childcare projects.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s part of a total of $106 million for 37 childcare projects statewide, according to data shared with the Daily News ahead of its public release. The awards were made on a competitive basis out of 197 programs that applied to the state funding program.<\/p>\n
The grants may be used for costs associated with creating new or expanding existing childcare capacity \u2014 including design, construction, renovation and equipment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese investments will help communities across the state create and improve childcare facilities, giving more families access to the care they need while supporting working parents and strengthening local economies,\u201d Hochul said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The majority of the New York City-based projects \u2014 five programs \u2014 are in Brooklyn, according to the governor\u2019s office. Two are in Queens, and one is in the Bronx.<\/p>\n
Capital projects that receive state funding must be completed by the end of 2029.<\/p>\n
The grant awards are the latest state investment in the city\u2019s childcare system.<\/p>\n
Hochul, who frequently speaks of her own experience leaving a job due to a lack of childcare, has emerged as a key ally to Mayor Zohran Mamdani \u2014 who campaigned on a promise of universal childcare ages 6 weeks and older.<\/p>\n
So far, the governor has given Mamdani nearly a half-billion dollars to help launch 2-K over two fiscal years and $100 million to expand 3-K in neighborhoods with waitlists this year. She also helped fund a popular childcare voucher program that low-income families can use at independent providers.<\/p>\n

\u2022Sharay Ditza Community Service, Inc. \u2013 $2,850,000 for new capacity<\/p>\n
\u2022Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula, Inc. \u2013 $1,150,055 for renovation<\/p>\n
\u2022Cozy Cove Corp \u2013 $1,957,595 for expansion<\/p>\n
\u2022Brooklyn Chinese-American Association \u2013 $1,000,000 for renovation<\/p>\n
\u2022Children of Promise, NYC \u2013 $1,446,837 for renovation<\/p>\n
\u2022Infinity Educational Special Programs Corp \u2013 $4,853,601 for renovation<\/p>\n
\u2022Boys and Girls Club of Metro Queens \u2013 $4,440,700 for renovation<\/p>\n
