ROCHESTER, N.Y. \u2014 Ambulance crews will soon have a new piece of equipment on board \u2014 a dash camera. A new regulation is requiring all ambulances in New York state to install the cameras.<\/p>\n

So you will soon see the new additions on the dashboards of virtually all ambulances recording what\u2019s coming and going.<\/p>\n

\nThe New York State Dept. of Health says current ambulances will essentially be grandfathered in, the regulation will only apply to new emergency ambulance service vehicles.
\nThe deadline for the changes takes effect in October<\/p>\n

\u201cThey’re incredibly useful for a couple of things. If, God forbid, there’s an accident, we can utilize that footage to see truly what happened. But it’s also fantastic for driver training,\u201d said Shane O\u2019Donnell, chief deputy for CHS Mobile Integrated Healthcare.<\/p>\n

\u201cCertainly for liability reasons, it’s fantastic to have access to them,\u201d said O\u2019Donnell.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese mandates that come out, they are more unfunded mandates, for an industry that’s not even considered an essential service,\u201d said David Hubble, deputy chief of Canandaigua Emergency Squad.<\/p>\n

He says the mandate could be tricky for smaller operations to manage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m not saying that forward-facing cams or dash cams aren’t good. They’re a great resource,” said Hubble. “Financially speaking, of course, all one hit, really hard to take.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the New York State Department of Health says it won\u2019t happen all at once. Current ambulances will essentially be grandfathered in. The regulation will only apply to new emergency ambulance service vehicles.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe plan on every time we buy a new ambulance, that we’re going to have it in the quote. So, it’s going to go forward, which is what the regulation actually says,\u201d said Hubble.<\/p>\n

There are requirements in the dash cam mandate. They have to meet specific capabilities. Those include, O\u2019Donnell says, the ability to record front and back facing, activate under a G-force change, record pre- and post-activation, and store the video recordings for a minimum time frame.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf our ambulance has to hit the brakes, all of a sudden it’ll meet a G-force requirement in which it’ll capture the video. So, it does a time before and after that trigger occurs. About 10 seconds before it’ll still show, and then 10 seconds after, whatever the thing is that triggers it. And that’ll automatically uploading to a cloud, basically in real time,\u201d said O\u2019Donnell.<\/p>\n
