New York isn\u2019t one of those states, but Tuesday night, people gathered at the Stonewall National Monument worried the decision reaches much farther than the playing field.<\/p>\n

In New York, state law prohibits discrimination based on gender identity<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not about sports for me. It\u2019s never been about sports. It\u2019s never been about bathrooms,\u201d Manhattan resident Chloe Elentari said. \u201cThis is what they\u2019re after. They\u2019re after all of our rights,\u201d Bronx resident Tanya Walker said.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3, in cases out of West Virginia and Idaho, upholding state laws that limit girls and women\u2019s school sports based on biological sex.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was very disappointed but not surprised,\u201d transgender athlete Chris Mosier said.<\/p>\n
Mosier says what worries him isn\u2019t only this ruling, it\u2019s what he believes could follow.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a distraction. It\u2019s an opportunity for them to say, look over there while our healthcare is being taken away, while people are losing their SNAP benefits,\u201d Mosier said.<\/p>\n
In New York, state law prohibits discrimination based on gender identity.<\/p>\n
State education guidance also allows transgender students to play on teams consistent with their gender identity. But advocates say the debate is already happening here.<\/p>\n
In neighboring Nassau County, County Executive Bruce Blakeman\u2019s order restricting transgender athletes remains in court.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Republican candidate for governor wrote: \u201cToday, the Supreme Court affirmed the constitutional rights of women and girls to be protected from unfair and unsafe competition by biological males.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe sport that they\u2019re playing may be the only escape for them to just experience childhood and not think who they are and have to defend themselves,\u201d Manhattan resident Ashley Ryan said.<\/p>\n
Still, supporters of the ruling argue it\u2019s about protecting girls\u2019 sports. Those gathered at Stonewall see it as part of a much broader fight.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to understand that an attack on one New Yorker is an attack on all New Yorkers,\u201d Mosier said. \u201cAnd an attack on one kid is an attack on all kids, and no student is safe unless all students are safe.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Transgender athletes are now banned from girls\u2019 and women\u2019s sports in more than half the country.
