Queen Camilla ignited anger for posting an Instagram pic with J.K. Rowling \u2014 given the timing and the author\u2019s controversial trans views.<\/a><\/p>\n

Taking to Instagram Tuesday, the wife of King Charles III shared a picture <\/a>of herself and the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d author posing together at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland.<\/p>\n

Camilla, 78, dressed in an all-blue outfit and stood side by side with Rowling, 60, who wore a white blazer over a navy blue blouse and trousers. The queen noted that the two had a \u201cshared passion for books\u201d and a \u201cdeep commitment\u201d to children reading for pleasure.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer Majesty and Ms Rowling discussed the importance of ensuring that young people have access to books and the vital part reading plays in opening doors for future generations,\u201d the caption read in part.<\/p>\n

Critics took to the comments section to call out Camilla for posting a pic with Rowling during Pride Month \u2014 an observance every June to celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) community \u2014 given Rowling\u2019s public anti-trans views.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cAs an admirer of the Queen and her Reading Room I\u2019m deeply disappointed in her giving a platform to JKR, any month but especially during Pride Month,\u201d one person wrote. \u201cThere are many other admirable individuals to spotlight who champion reading for children and young people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another user commented, \u201cDuring pride month, is a statement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201ctrans rights are human rights \ud83c\udff3\ufe0f\u200d\u26a7\ufe0f\u2764\ufe0f,\u201d multiple others wrote.<\/p>\n

One Instagram user even called the royal \u201cdeplorable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAND During pride month no less \ud83c\udff3\ufe0f\u200d\u26a7\ufe0f\ud83c\udff3\ufe0f\u200d\ud83c\udf08 I stand with the LGBTQI+ community \u270a\ud83c\udffc,\u201d the user continued.<\/p>\n

However, some defended Rowling, noting that she was entitled to her own opinions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a clear double standard when people with large platforms say things you agree with and are celebrated for it, but someone who expresses a different opinion is condemned and attacked,\u201d one person argued in the comments section. \u201cThat kind of inconsistency comes across as biased.\u201d<\/p>\n

In October 2023, Rowling shared a photo on social media<\/a> reading, \u201cRepeat after us: Trans women are women,\u201d with the caption, \u201cNo.\u201d She said she would willingly go to jail for her views.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll happily do two years if the alternative is compelled speech and forced denial of the reality and importance of sex,\u201d Rowling wrote.<\/p>\n

The author has continued to speak out on trans rights, creating a rift between major \u201cHarry Potter\u201d stars<\/a> like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who have publicly denounced her views.<\/a><\/p>\n

Last May, Rowling\u00a0hit back in a scathing essay<\/a>\u00a0when multiple \u201cHarry Potter\u201d actors signed a pro-trans open letter\u00a0after the UK Supreme Court ruled that the terms \u201cwoman\u201d and \u201csex\u201d refer strictly to a biological woman and biological sex.<\/p>\n

She described the actors \u2014 among them being Eddie Redmayne, Paapa Essiedu and Katie Leung \u2014 as \u201cback-stabbing colleagues\u201d who she said are \u201cmotivated by fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Actor John Lithgow \u2014 who\u2019s playing Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore<\/a>\u00a0in the \u201cHarry Potter and the Philosopher\u2019s Stone\u201d\u00a0HBO reboot\u00a0\u2014 admitted in April that he was urged to stay away from the show<\/a> due to Rowling\u2019s controversial views, but ultimately decided not to.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do disagree with much of it. Much of it, I think, has been twisted and represented, and she has sort of doubled down on it at her own cost,\u201d he told the New Yorker Radio Hour.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just felt the reasons to do it were much, much stronger than the reasons to protest against what Rowling has done and said.\u201d<\/p>\n
