{"id":284371,"date":"2026-07-02T00:49:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T00:49:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/284371\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T00:49:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T00:49:17","slug":"north-country-farmers-react-to-new-yorks-30-million-tariff-relief-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/284371\/","title":{"rendered":"North Country farmers react to New York\u2019s $30 million tariff relief program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) &#8211; North Country farmers are responding to New York state\u2019s newly launched $30 million program aimed at helping them offset losses from federal tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwnytv.com\/2026\/06\/29\/new-york-launches-30m-tariff-relief-program-farmers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wwnytv.com\/2026\/06\/29\/new-york-launches-30m-tariff-relief-program-farmers\/\">As we reported earlier this week<\/a>, the Agricultural Resiliency Against Tariffs Program makes farmers eligible for grants of up to $25,000.<\/p>\n<p>Farmer: tariffs affect operation<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Ron Robbins, owner of North Harbor Dairy, said the tariffs implemented by the Trump administration have driven up costs across his operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s huge. Everything we touch is impacted by exports out of this country,\u201d Robbins said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Jefferson County Agricultural Coordinator Jay Matteson said the tariffs create uncertainty regardless of which direction prices move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt can drive prices up and it can drive prices down, both of which can be detrimental to the farm,\u201d Matteson said.<\/p>\n<p>Drop in a bucket<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Matteson said that while $25,000 certainly doesn\u2019t hurt, it\u2019s like a drop in a bucket when it comes to losses from tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe better outcome is, on the other end of all of this, there are better trade deals which provide better markets and better prices for our agricultural products,\u201d Matteson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">State Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball said the program is a signal of the state\u2019s commitment to its farming community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s obviously not going to solve all the challenges that agriculture has with trade and tariffs, etc. But it\u2019s meant to be a signal that New York State is there for you,\u201d Ball said.<\/p>\n<p>How to apply<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Farmers interested in applying can <a href=\"https:\/\/agriculture.ny.gov\/agricultural-resiliency-against-tariffs-program\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/agriculture.ny.gov\/agricultural-resiliency-against-tariffs-program\">click here for more information and to apply<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WWNY.
