A book in development will provide a glimpse into the life of Queen Lili\u02bbuokalani.<\/p>\n
The book, which will compile the letters written to and from Queen Lili\u02bbuokalani and the Kal\u0101kaua family, will be published by Hui H\u0101nai, a nonprofit organization dedicated to Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s last monarch.<\/p>\n
To share more about the project, Hui H\u0101nai board members Hardy Spoehr, S. Haunani Apoliona, and chair Diane Peters-Nguyen joined HPR on The Conversation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are so thrilled that this project is actually going to be coming to fruition,\u201d Peters-Nguyen told HPR. \u201cIt\u2019s part of our work in perpetuating the Queen\u2019s legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Spoehr explained that the letters offered an intimate view of Liliu\u02bbokalani’s family relationships, as well as the many personal tragedies she suffered throughout her life.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe letters \u2026. move from a time when she was just a young girl, a lady, but young in her teens, to a time when she got married, of course, to John Dominis, all the way through to the very sad ending of Princess Ka\u02bbiulani,\u201d Spoehr said.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring that period of time, you actually see the maturity of the queen, and just how brilliant she was,\u201d he explained. \u201cI think it’s important to realize that the queen is really at the crossroads of Hawaiian history.\u201d<\/p>\n
The forthcoming publication is part of a project that was started by the late historian David W. Forbes, who is known for archiving and publishing Queen Lili\u02bbuokalani’s diary entries as well as her autobiography, \u201cHawaii\u2019s Story by Hawaii\u2019s Queen.\u201d<\/p>\n
