This includes two giant versions of the “stars and stripes,” which are now flying.<\/p>\n
Early arrivals to Sunset Bay on Thursday morning stopped to watch as a tightly rolled American flag was lifted by a boom truck on lean from a local roofer, which when unfurled would measure 800 square feet.<\/p>\n

The owners of the Sunset Bay Beach Club, New York State Sen. George Borello and his wife Kelly, said the flag once flew over a navy ship and was acquired at an auction by the club’s previous owner.<\/p>\n
They thought it would be appropriate to get it out of storage and display it vertically for America’s 250.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, about 40 miles to the northeast in Varysburg outside the Maplery on U.S. Route 20A, another couple thought an equally as giant American flag would be just the thing to show their appreciation for the nation.<\/p>\n
“We have a small business but we couldn’t do that without our freedom,” business co-owner Rebecca Boxler said. “So, we are very happy we live here and could do this.”<\/p>\n
The effort to raise the flag was years in the making according to her husband, Warren Boxler.<\/p>\n
“We did the foundation three years ago and we finally had a good enough syrup season where we could purchase the flagpole,” Mr. Boxler said, noting they drove to Michigan to retrieve in the flag pole which came in three pieces before it was welded together, painted, and erected.<\/p>\n
Back at Sunset Bay, however, problems arose in the form of 21 mph wind gusts off of Lake Erie, which turned their flag into a giant sail proving too much for the half dozen men struggling to keep it from touching the ground.<\/p>\n
With a crowd of onlookers growing, some of whom jumped in to assist, it was eventually decided that since the truck wasn’t going anywhere they could first anchor the flag to that, then tie the other end to the posts outside the beach club, so that the flag could be flown horizontally.<\/p>\n
“It’s kind of the story of America, right? You have a plan, and then you’ve got to improvise,” Borrello said. “America is about innovation, ingenuity, and in the end a little bit of good luck and faith and help from your neighbors. And that’s what we had today.”<\/p>\n
