Today, the NYC Health<\/a> Department has launched an investigation into a likely community cluster of Legionnaires\u2019 disease<\/a>\u00a0in the Upper East Side neighborhoods of Carnegie Hill and Yorkville\u00a0(ZIP codes 10028 and 10128).\u00a0As of July 2,\u00a0, 2026, two (2) people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires\u2019 disease in the affected area,\u00a0and confirmatory results for other potential cases are currently pending. To date, there are no deaths associated with this cluster.\u00a0Any New Yorkers who currently live or work in this area or people who have visited the area since late June and are experiencing flu-like symptoms,\u00a0such as fever,\u00a0cough,\u00a0or difficulty breathing should contact a healthcare<\/a> provider immediately.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The NYC Health Department is actively investigating this Legionnaires\u2019\u00a0disease cluster by sampling and testing water from all cooling tower systems in the area.\u00a0Past community clusters have been caused by Legionella bacteria spreading through the air from the mist produced by cooling towers.\u00a0Building owners with any cooling towers that test positive for the presence of Legionella bacteria will be directed to conduct full remediation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A Health Alert is going out to healthcare providers,\u00a0advising them to consider Legionnaire\u2019s disease for people presenting with compatible symptoms,\u00a0and community outreach will be conducted in the area beginning over the weekend.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Legionnaires\u2019 disease is a type of pneumonia that is caused by the bacteria Legionella, which grows in warm water.\u00a0People only get sick by breathing in water vapor containing Legionella bacteria.\u00a0Symptoms resemble other types of pneumonia and can include fever, chills, muscle aches, and cough.\u00a0Legionnaires\u2019 disease is not contagious and can be treated with antibiotics when caught early.\u00a0With warm weather this weekend,\u00a0the NYC Health Department wants to remind New Yorkers that it is safe to use air conditioners, cooing centers, and all city facilities in this neighborhood.\u00a0It is also safe to shower, and drink tap water.\u00a0Mist from a cooling tower blows outside and does not affect the internal air conditioning, window air conditioning units,\u00a0or plumbing system.\u00a0Individuals at higher risk include those 50 years old and older, cigarette smokers, and people with chronic lung disease or compromised immune systems. People living or working in the area who are experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention with a primary care provider or seek urgent care.\u00a0<\/p>\n
