{"id":286084,"date":"2026-07-03T18:31:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T18:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/286084\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T18:31:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T18:31:07","slug":"shark-bite-at-jones-beach-sends-person-to-hospital-swimming-halted-officials-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/286084\/","title":{"rendered":"Shark bite at Jones Beach sends person to hospital, swimming halted, officials say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A beachgoer suffered a shark bite Friday at Jones Beach, officials confirmed, one day after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/shark-long-island-point-lookout-lido-beach\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">multiple shark sightings<\/a>\u00a0forced Long Island and New York City beaches to briefly shut down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jones Beach officials said the person suffered a minor shark bite in the water at Field 6 at around noon, forcing swimming to be halted for about an hour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The injured beachgoer was taken to the hospital for treatment, officials said.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a crowded day at the beach, between the Fourth of July weekend and a full-length practice for the upcoming Jones Beach Air Show on Sunday.  <\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, lifeguards at Point Lookout spotted an 8-foot shark and immediately ordered people out of the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>The Town of Hempstead\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/hempstead-adding-reinforcements-to-shark-patrol-after-recent-sightings\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shark Patrol<\/a>\u00a0responded with a drone and watercraft to track the shark until it was safe for swimming to resume.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We saw about approximately an 8-foot shark cruising from east to west right through our area.
