Starting today and running through Sunday, July 5, troopers will surge their numbers in Ulster County and statewide to catch drunk and drugged drivers with patrols and checkpoints. Last year they issued over 10,000 tickets for various offenses.<\/p>\n
Drivers caught using phones or other electronic devices will be targeted as well, with police employing Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles (colloquially known as unmarked cars) in their pursuit of violators.<\/p>\n
It has never been more expensive or punishing to be caught driving under the influence in New York. Police noted \u201cthe average drinking and driving arrest costs up to $10,000\u201d and can include arrest and jail time.<\/p>\n
Drivers should note that driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) as low as 0.05% is still an infraction, and could get you a fine up to $500, a 90-day license suspension and up to 15 days in jail. Depending on physiology and circumstance, some people can have a BAC of over 0.05% after consuming just one drink. Having a BAC of over 0.08% is a full DWI charge with serious consequences that only compound on repeat offenses.
