The affair, stretched over two days in the middle of Manhattan, involved street closures, subway station exit rerouting, an uptick in police presence, and a handful of bars and restaurants shutting down during the 4th of July weekend, smack dab in the middle of the World Cup and a heat wave, during whatever the hell’s going on with all those tall ships. For the two days the duo took over MSG, I walked the area, dipping into delis and coffee shops, bars and restaurants, into Penn Station and Moynihan Hall, and all around the surrounding blocks in 100 degree heat. I spoke to fans and tourists, paparazzi and cops, Marriott bartenders and Crocs employees, and found that life was mostly just trudged along like normal, if not sweatier. “She can fuck up a lot,” a woman told me, waiting for New Jersey Transit, “but I don’t think she can fuck up the trains.”

It’s both auspicious and a total coincidence that I arrive at Penn Station at 11:11am — something perhaps Swift herself would appreciate, if she happens to appreciate scene-reporting during one of the most important weekends of her life. Many of the celebs in question do not seem to understand that they can pass their phones up to their drivers in lieu of rolling down their own windows, so we end up catching sight of several guests: Bowen Yang (with Alison Roman), Lucy Dacus, Aaron Dessner, Jerrod Carmichael, George Stephanopoulos, Nikki Glaser.

When a couple, Izzy and Matt, both 26 and from D.C., stumble upon our corner and ask what’s going on and, subsequently, who’ve we’ve seen, I rattle off the above list. They respond with blank stares. “Maybe these are people who are famous in New York,” Izzy says. A middle-aged woman standing nearby tells them she saw Tony Romo. “Now he’s famous,” Matt announces.

I head over to the nearby pizza restaurant Roberta’s. I was told cops were letting people through the barricade here so long as they were actually going into Roberta’s. I get past the blockade with no problem and head in to have a Diet Coke. The woman working the register is soft-spoken and bored. She tells me it’s been “so dead” all day, which means no tips. On the restaurant’s second floor, spirits are a little higher. “We have popsicles in the back,” one of the waitstaff tells me. One server shows up to his shift late, asking, genuinely, “Literally what the fuck is going on outside?” A different coworker emerges from the kitchen: “I can’t stop listening to the new Madonna!”

I dip into the Crocs store on 34th Street for another blast of air conditioning and I overhear the employees talking about the nearby nuptials. “It feels like a hoax, like, why would that happen? She’s done shows there,” one wonders aloud. “It’d be like if I got married here.”

I loop back for one more shot of the police perimeter, tightening by the second. “Bitch, I’m at the Taylor Swift wedding barricade,” a woman says to a friend on FaceTime, spinning around in the intersection to show off the cops. An officer flashes a peace sign while another tells her to move along. “Always some stupid stuff going on here,” she tells her friend, before turning a corner and heading off into the night.

See All

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Madison Square Garden wedding was a huge inconvenience — at least, on paper.…

[8
2408,222,2538,9,56,63,65,64,1473,83849,100044,15839,20492,20493
post-286662","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york-city","tag-celebrity","tag-madison-square-garden","tag-music","tag-new-york","tag-ny","tag-nyc","tag-nyc-headlines","tag-nyc-news","tag-taylor-swift","tag-taylor-swift-and-travis-kelce-wedding","tag-tayvis-wedding","tag-travis-kelce","tag-vulture-homepage-lede","tag-vulture-section-lede
["GET
