Kathy Hochul’s senior director of major event operations.

He described preparations that have included setting up “unified command centers” where officials from different agencies can congregate, seeking budget allocations for the latest anti-drone technology and holding crisis exercises where worst-case scenarios are gamed out.

“Not a week has gone by over the past six months where there hasn’t been some sort of tabletop exercise to prepare for everything from extreme weather — which is now here — to pouring rain to concerns around drones or other sorts of cyberattacks,” Mr. Brannan said.

Sail4th 250 brought about 80 vessels of various sizes carrying about 20,000 sailors in and around New York Harbor to mark the country’s anniversary. Many of them traveled up the East River on Friday and were set to take part in an even larger parade of tall ships on Saturday on the Hudson River. The procession will include 40 tall ships from more than 20 nations, as well as more than 30 naval vessels and nearly 200 aircraft.

Vice President JD Vance and the acting secretary of the U.S. Navy, Hung Cao, will be in attendance, boarding an aircraft carrier for a full-scale naval review.

And then, on Saturday night, the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show — its 50th — is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people to riverside viewing areas.

In anticipation of the crush of spectators, thousands of police officers will be patrolling New York’s waterfronts and city streets through the weekend.

The police are using drones and explosive-detection dogs and are deploying heavy weapons teams and bomb squad personnel. At a news conference on Wednesday about the preparations, Police Commissioner Jessica S.
