NEW YORK — A fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge during New York City’s July Fourth fireworks display late Saturday, sending flames and smoke into the air before firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control. No injuries were reported.

The New York City Fire Department said two fire engines were dispatched to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters were seen spraying water on the flames shortly before 10 p.m. while the bridge, which had been closed to traffic for the fireworks show, remained off limits to vehicles.

A Fire Department spokesperson said such incidents are not uncommon during major fireworks displays and noted that safety measures, including keeping spectators at a distance, are designed to reduce risks.

The fireworks show began earlier than scheduled because of forecasts of severe weather that disrupted Independence Day celebrations across parts of the U.S. East Coast.

In Washington, D.C., approaching storms prompted officials to evacuate crowds gathered on the National Mall, while other celebrations across the region were delayed or canceled.

[36
98,11198,100,99,194,545,8406,8078,91623,9,24,63
post-287264","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-brooklyn","tag-brooklyn","tag-brooklyn-bridge","tag-brooklyn-headlines","tag-brooklyn-news","tag-fdny","tag-fire","tag-fireworks","tag-independence-day","tag-july-fourth","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc
["GET
