As usual with Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid), things don’t go that smoothly, leading to a big status quo change for several of our TVL characters. And meanwhile, Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) is developing an extraordinarily toxic relationship with waitress Regina (Delainey Hayles) who just happens to look like his departed daughter Claudia (also Hayles). But perhaps most importantly, it’s time to meet The Queen of the Damned, Akasha (Sheila Atim).

Boy, that’s a lot, huh? Well, as showrunner Rolin Jones once told me, the show is a seven-layer burrito, with multiple things going on at the same time. To throw out a few more, Lestat’s mother Gabriella (Jennifer Ehle), who is also his sexual partner (ew) is clearly pushing him to create his music to rile up The Great Conversion, aka the point when the vampire population starts to overtake the human population. She’s got a nihilism wish, and Lestat ultimately just wants his mother to love him the way he loves her. Also of note, she’s pretending to be “Sofia,” as most people think Gabriella is dead.

One of those people is a vampire, Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), who is making a documentary about Lestat and wrestling with his maker, Armand (Assad Zaman) saying he loves him. Also, sometimes everyone disappears when the two of them are together. Also, also? Armand has Lestat’s sometimes band-member Alex (Seamus Patterson) under his thrall, and is clearly working some sort of angle that is seemingly anti-The Great Conversion, though we don’t know how or why yet.

And perhaps most importantly, Lestat was shot at by a crazed fan who believes in vampires, and seemingly proved their existence to the world. As more and more vamps raise their voices to call for The Great Conversion, what will Lestat releasing an album do the fervor? Probably nothing good, so let’s recap The Vampire Lestat Episode 5, “New York.” And spoilers past this point.

Take One

<img loading="lazy" data-dominant-color="3c291e" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #3c291e;" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" data-attachment-id="109311" data-permalink="https://comicbookclublive.com/2026/07/05/the-vampire-lestat-episode-5-recap-new-york/tvl_05_sg_0902_0237_rt/" data-orig-file="https://comicbookclublive.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/TVL_05_SG_0902_0237_RT-scaled.webp" data-orig-size="2560,1707" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"© 2026 AMC Networks Entertainment LLC. Over scenes of the band playing in the studio, Chinese food containers, cigarettes and curled up dollar bills everywhere, Lestat explains that his first coffin had the likeness of his maker — Magnus (Damien Atkins) — carved into its lid. He continues to describe sleeping alone in his coffin as he forces the band to play the same riffs over and over again.

What exactly is Lestat going for, the band wonders. And what exactly is Lestat going for with this narration about how that coffin was destroyed by Louis during one of his “redirected moods”? “We are going for… Again,” Lestat explains unhelpfully. But then he brings it together by saying his fave coffin is the 7,000 square foot model he endured in the Fall of 2025. Which would be this recording studio.

We also get some details here: the world thinks Lestat is dead after the shooting (unless they think he’s a vampire), Pitchfork trashed the eventual album, and in return the album trashed the entire world. Thanks to copious payments and a mass shooting that happened the same night, Lestat has (mostly) been able to fake his death while producing his album with, bizarrely, Sam Barclay (Christopher Geary, former Théâtre des Vampires playwright, sometimes vampire DJ, and now record producer.

Why is Lestat doing this? His goal is to produce an album worthy of his legacy, perform it live exactly once, and… Wait, is that Louis in the studio? It sure is, which is a wild little detail to throw in there, as “Sofia” tries to squash rumors of Lestat’s survival, as Christine (Jeanine Serralles) decided getting shot last episode was enough and retired to her sex dungeon wallpapered with billable hours.

…But also, no, it isn’t Louis, not really. It’s a vision, or ghost of Louis, as Lestat has been haunted from his fractured psyche all season. Lestat also explains the Sam of it all, that he had faked his own death before, actually knew how to use the board, and most importantly Gabriella hired him because Lestat hated him, and that would “keep me lively.”

To drive in the torture he’s putting the band through, after 61 takes on their end, in his own estimation he nails “Big Bad Wolf” in one take. And how did Lestat end up on this musical path anyway? He’ll tell us, all the way back to the beginning. “That’s right, I’m finally going to talk about… The Queen,” says Lestat as we smash to the opening credits. And as usual, we’ll note what Lestat says at the end of the credits. This time, what else could it be? “Again.”

The Queen Of The Damned

<img loading="lazy" data-dominant-color="281f15" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #281f15;" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" data-attachment-id="109313" data-permalink="https://comicbookclublive.com/2026/07/05/the-vampire-lestat-episode-5-recap-new-york/tvl_05_sg_1017_0059_rt/" data-orig-file="https://comicbookclublive.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/TVL_05_SG_1017_0059_RT-scaled.webp" data-orig-size="2560,1707" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"© 2026 AMC Networks Entertainment LLC. But he doesn’t want a drum, he wants it to “sound like death approaching, like life emerging.” This is over shots of digging a grave in the mud and pulling a body out (Lestat, of course). TC explains that she can do faster or harder, but doesn’t play “metaphorical drums.” Sofia has an idea why that is: TC is not a vampire, and her deepest pain is a “man walking away mid-ceremony.”

TC calls Sofia “Yoko Mirren” under her breath, which is pretty hilarious, and then Lestat speaks frankly to the band. TC’s drums are his heart. Alex’s guitar is his hunger. Salamander’s (Ryan Kattner) bass is the “night terrors that follow me to coffin.” And as for Larry’s (Noah Reid) guitar, that is “my frailty,” presaging what happens to Larry at the end of the episode.

Lestat further explains that they are here to pull the plug on his three-century trainwreck of a life. “Have some reverence,” he hisses. “Kill me savagely.”

So, okay before we get to what happens next, a little word on continuity. Lestat has maintained that after his first love Nicholas (Joseph Potter) died, he buried himself in the dirt for a century, only emerging a year before he headed to New Orleans and met Louis. That scene of Lestat getting dug out of the mud? And what’s about to happen next? All during that 100 year period. So yes, Lestat was lying and hiding a very, very big secret. Two, actually.

The first is who dug him out. Slowly pulling himself through a crypt, caked in mud, Lestat comes to a strange chamber where a man is muttering. The man sarcastically responds to Lestat’s “where am I” with a few thank yous, like “thank you for saving me from starvation.” That man? Marius de Romanus (Christopher Heyerdahl), Armand’s maker.

Back to continuity. Throughout the season, we’ve been reminded multiple times by Armand that Marius is dead, and has been dead for centuries. This despite Gabriella casually bringing up Marius’s name and making sure he’s definitely dead, but we’ll put a pin in that for a second. Clearly, he is not dead, and as we’re about to discover has been on a very specific task for a very long time. Whether Armand knows Marius is alive; and whether Marius is still alive in 2025? TBD.

“He was wrong,” Marius says when Lestat brings up that Armand said he was destroyed. “Rotten boy.”

Also, Marius mentions he was “The Keeper,” and that is now Lestat — as “she” asked for him, and told Marius where to find him. “She likes music,” Lestat is told, then brought to see two, totally still figures that must be kept. They are the second secret Lestat has been hiding: the King and the Queen of the Damned. The Queen is Akasha, whose name we’ve heard multiple times on the show so far. The King is Enkil, who, as we’ll discover shortly, seems to no longer be one of the unliving.

They both look like stone, but are “very much alive.”

The Depths Of Living

Back in the studio, Sofia is working out that they’ll only do one gig as The Vampire Lestat, turning down an offer from Florence Welch to open for her. Lestat tells Larry to “play from the groin,” and one might note that recovering alcoholic Alex is drinking straight from a bottle of booze or wine. While they play, Lestat tells Sam to turn off Larry’s guitar entirely, he’ll just handle it himself. And Sam protests, but Lestat tells him to be the “spineless mole” once more, and just do the job.

That transitions into Lestat learning how to just do the job of being Keeper, to fill Akasha’s burrow with “worldly things,” and bring back things from the world, presents and surprises so she can see how the Earth is developing. Lestat doesn’t want the job, he wants to die. But Marius pushes back that he doesn’t: he was in that grave 80 years, plenty of time to “learn the depths despair.” Now it is times for him to learn the “depths of living,” and Marius has lost himself.

He continues his instruction, handing Lestat a violin and suggesting he mimics Nicholas. Lestat must also keep his hunts short, Marius explains, and if he must bring a kill back burn them and use the ashes to “keep her thriving.” But not blood, because that will overwhelm her.

Meanwhile, Lestat looks at Enkil, whose brains have poured out of the back of his broken skull. What happened to him? Marius asks if Lestat remembers a night the vampires burnt under the light of the moon on December 19, 1802. Marius had been transporting the couple to a new crypt, got Akasha to safety, got drunk, and forgot that Enkil was still up in the sun. They all burned, and “now you know why there are so few of us.”

So yeah, the blood of Enkil and Akasha is tied to every vampire on Earth. Destroy them, and you destroy them all. Keep them safe, and the vampires live. “I set us back ages,” Marius says. “She is the seed… If she burns, we all burn.”

Lestat continues to protest, but Marius leaves him to it, and explains that the Queen will explain herself. But it will take time, he didn’t hear her talk for 22 years. “Twenty-three,” whispers Akasha as Marius leaves.

Might As Well Be Walking In The Sun

<img loading="lazy" data-dominant-color="392514" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #392514;" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" data-attachment-id="109314" data-permalink="https://comicbookclublive.com/2026/07/05/the-vampire-lestat-episode-5-recap-new-york/tvl_05_sg_0828_0002_rt/" data-orig-file="https://comicbookclublive.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/TVL_05_SG_0828_0002_RT.webp" data-orig-size="2396,1597" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.8","credit":"Sophie Giraud/AMC","camera":"NIKON Z6_3","caption":"Jacob Anderson as Louis De Pointe Du Lac - Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat _ Episode 05 - Photo Credit: Sophie Giraud/AMC","created_timestamp":"1756395217","copyright":"© 2025 AMC Network Entertainment LLC. He’s having dinner with Fauxdia (aka Regina) talking about his business dealings, and she is doing a good job of faking it. And not only that, they’ve also hired a woman to pretend to be Claudia’s lover Madeleine Éparvier (Roxane Duran, though this one is credited as “Off-Broadway Madeleine,” played by Amy Keating), who is doing not as good of a job, aping a ridiculous French accent. Louis also doesn’t seem to be totally buying the play-acting — and Fauxdia keeps slipping in and out of her own fake accent — making the whole thing extremely sad.

Not-Madeleine reveals she played Satine in a tour of Moulin Rouge, and getting back into character they begin to make out, but a little too much while Louis tries to pretend this is exactly what he wanted.

Then it’s over to Daniel, who is also in a sort of pathetic place, interviewing people on the street about Lestat’s “death.” A weirdo, as a capper, talks about how Lestat left him when he needed them most. But it’s clear this guy is just obsessed with Interview with the Vampire, and quoting it back to the guy who wrote it… And that becomes clear when Armand begins quoting it, too, inside Daniel’s mind.

Creepazoid dismissed, Daniel confronts Armand in a park, angry that the latter claims to have been in love with him for 52 years. Daniel wants Armand to prove it’s true, and he lays out how he has been following him his whole life and both guiding him and keeping him safe. And on August 5, 2025, Armand explains that he doesn’t play to say the word “love” until he’s made amends for the profound harm he’s brought into Daniel’s life.

Perhaps more surprising, Armand lays out that after he would trail Daniel, he would let Louis know exactly what happened, that Daniel “sainted him” in his book but he is “calculating to the core.” Will we get an Armand season next time, from his perspective? Possibly, but back to the present, Armand wonders why Daniel is continuing the documentary despite being abandoned by Lestat. Armand wants to be Daniel’s maker, he offers, to walk in the sun together, and he begins teasing something about Lestat and Sofia. That he knew her as someone else… As Gabriella. Lestat’s mother. Who he “lays with.”

“What,” says Daniel, about to cry, but not about that last part. About Armand telling him he wants to let him “walk in the sun.”

Scoops Ahoy

Meanwhile, Lestat is digging into the thing that Daniel is ignoring, holding hands with “Sofia” and wanting to know, once again, why she left him. But not in last week’s episode, or in New Orleans… Which curiously implies that Gabriella was around during the events of Interview with the Vampire and we haven’t seen that bit yet.

Gabriella recalls when Lestat kept picking up sticks at the river, and he has a flash of, likely, when he saw witches burned in town, one of his core, traumatic memories. “You were a terrible mother,” he tells her, and she agrees, honing in on the actual time he wants to know about: when she left him by the beach in Spain, likely the actual thing that caused him to bury himself in the ground for 80 years; not the death of Nicholas.

She explains that he didn’t need her anymore, but that’s not true, really… He kisses her anyway, and asks whether she needs him now. She does, and he walks away, gotten what he wanted; her to want him more than he wants her. In the background, the band chants “make more,” wondering what that means, and it’s clear Lestat is on to what Gabriella is after (again, the Great Conversion).

Back with the Queen (hey, weird that the mother of all vampires is being juxtaposed with Lestat’s mama drama, probably just a coincidence), he’s now cleaned up and talking to Akasha’s still body. He’s telling her about the burgeoning time of electricity. And he brings her a lever-action ice cream scoop… Which, I just want to mention at this point, first appears in the first episode of the season. Seriously, go back and rewatch Episode 1, “Detroit,” at some point as it is chock full of shots that pop up weeks later.

Lestat loves the word scoop, and leaves it next to her hand. As he plays violin inexpertly, she says, “scoooop,” and he wonders if this will eventually happen to him, this still existence. He also wonders who made Akasha, and why vampires exist (though he just frames it as “why do we endure at all,” which is a profound question about our own existence, not just fictional vampires). “And why did she leave me,” Lestat asks, wondering if he’s evil, and if so what that means.

As he asks the big questions, Akasha moves, knocking the scoop off the dais, to Lestat’s shock.

In the studio again as Lestat tries to sing “Big Boss,” the ghost (not literal) of Nicholas taunts him the way he’s taunting the band. Lestat can’t quite get it, so he runs out in the sun, recording himself as his skin peels off. He keeps trying, screaming as he does and when the charred Lestat screams so loud he breaks glass? It’s time to move on.

Turn Of The Century

<img loading="lazy" data-dominant-color="39291c" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #39291c;" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" data-attachment-id="109315" data-permalink="https://comicbookclublive.com/2026/07/05/the-vampire-lestat-episode-5-recap-new-york/tvl_05_sg_1022_0060_rt/" data-orig-file="https://comicbookclublive.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/TVL_05_SG_1022_0060_RT-scaled.webp" data-orig-size="2560,1706" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"Sophie Giraud/AMC","camera":"NIKON Z6_3","caption":"Sam Reid as Lestat De Lioncourt - Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat _ Episode 05 - Photo Credit: Sophie Giraud/AMC","created_timestamp":"1761163980","copyright":"© 2026 AMC Networks Entertainment LLC. She’s asking about Lemuel (Moses Sumney), his current lover… And Louis tells her she doesn’t have to do the accent, and they start again. While Louis talks about the relationship, and it being easy, Fauxdia writes down something in a notebook when a cop asks them to leave. Louis freezes the cop, and Regina asks Louis to do it to her. He does, and as she freezes, the almost crying Louis takes her hand. He knows its not Claudia, but desperately wants her to be. Regina knows he touched her, or suspects it.

…And then we’re back in time again with Lestat and Akasha, who is tapping with her finger on her coffin. Lestat, who clearly is losing it, has set up a dinner with nameplates for Armand (who gets a loaf of rotten bread), Marie Antoinette (who gets cake), and an empty plate for Gabriella (who gets nothing). Plus cabbages for his father and brother, and a violin for Nicholas. Lestat screams and wails and feels the music until Akasha says, “No voices.”

He gets ashes for Akasha, as he taunts the dead body of Enkil. Which is when Lestat makes a little booboo: he gives Akasha a dab of blood on her lips, ostensibly to celebrate the New Year. And he lightly grips her hand, just like Louis gripped Regina’s hand. Outside the people count down to the New Year while Lestat freaks out about a scratched record. He apologizes for ruining Akasha’s party — it’s 1900 now, the turn of the century — but the party is just getting started, as the blood has given her enough power to sit up and tell Lestat to “come.” She’s still frozen like a statue, but he’s drawn to her, and reaches out his hand. “Come to me,” she commands, and drinks from him.

If you’ve been wondering what it means when Lestat says he has the blood of Akasha? Well, she has his blood, too.

In the studio, while Lestat sings he sees his younger, stuttering self, and talks to him with compassion. He wants to know why Gabriella took him to the witches place, much to the confusion of Sam. Meanwhile, his younger self tells him to check his phone. It’s “Thomas Pitty He’s A Whore” aka Louis, who needs Lestat’s help. Sam wants to keep going, but Lestat is torn between Gabriella disappearing, Louis needing him, and he takes it out on Larry, then leaves.

Later, Alex tells Larry that Lestat is an asshole, and explains that he can stop drinking anytime he wants. He gives Larry a pep speech, tells him to do one take, then rest. Remember that phrasing for later.

Ashes To Ashes

Over with Louis and Lestat, the former lays out everything for the latter as he listens. Louis is confused, to put it nicely, unclear whether it’s really Claudia or not. And he wants Lestat to go in and let him know if Regina is really Claudia. Lestat notes that he was shot in the streets and Louis didn’t call him. He admits to be a selfish bastard, and Lestat sighs, and goes into the Brick & Bacon.

There, he sees Regina, and is stunned. She instantly knows it’s Lestat, tells her to stop performing, and orders. It’s clear Lestat, too, is emotionally compromised by this Claudia clone. Lestat wants to know why she’s still working the diner if Louis is paying her an obscene amount of money, and she she explains that if things get “too freaky, I just pick up a shift or two… To get some real, real, to get back into my life.” She thinks Louis is bringing Lestat into the masquerade now, and puts on the accent, asking if “we’re gonna be a family, Uncle Les?” Lestat wants her to stop, picturing the moments of Claudia dying on stage, and explains that despite looking like Claudia, she has a hip injury and no heart murmur; one thing Claudia didn’t have, the other she did.

Lestat puts on his glasses, and exits, heading back to Louis’s car. “It’s not her. It’s not anything like her,” Lestat says. It’s the eyes, really, there’s no spark there. Lestat tells Louis not to see her again, and “the next time someone tries to murder me, pick up the phone.”

Bereft, Lestat ruins to the studio and begins to play piano, writing and singing a new song. He sings it then, a song from father’s to daughters, his first about Claudia as her ghost-vision lurks in the background. It’s, in a word, devastating. A ballad that Sam records as we see the charred Claudia not wanting to listen, and the ashes rain down on Lestat in the studio. Together, they play the keys. Again, no coincidence that Lestat is being consecrated with ashes, just like Akasha.

The whole thing is the closest this season has gotten to a music video; and later, Lestat and Sam play the fully orchestrated version for the band.

They’re confused… It doesn’t sound like the band, at all. “How’s it fit with ‘Long Face’,” asks Salamander. Lestat explains that it doesn’t fit… They’re going to rerecord the entire album. Larry quits and leaves, and TC is shocked, but the thing is they’re not recording it for humans, it’s for vampires. So what to do? The band wants to become vampires. Lestat won’t do it, though. He tells a story of being on the shore of Spain, “and my great love left me… Until a Queen took pity.”

Now, listen, I am not going to even attempt to break down the next part but in the most cursory way as we head to Akasha, high on Lestat’s blood, and Lestat, high on hers, floating over her room, stunned. Akasha is babbling words that are clearly prophecy, past, present, future all at the same time, and likely a key to understanding this whole season and what comes next. But it hits so rapidly that you’d not supposed to understand now; that comes later.

In the midst of this, Marius returns, and it turns out Lestat has been floating in the air for three days. Marius tries to push her back on the slab, which he does, releasing Lestat to the floor. He shouts at him, telling him to leave, and Akasha continues to babble — perhaps about Marius keeping her trapped in this room/in life, though it isn’t entirely clear — while Lestat attempts to exit. Marius shouts, his words obscured by Akasha, an utter nightmare. “I am… THE ANSWER,” Akasha screams. I’d assume that’s “to all the questions she just asked,” but I guess we’ll find out.

Anyway, Lestat tries to dissuade the band more, telling them to leave with Larry. But Alex disagrees, cutting his palm. Salamander cuts his wrist. TC taps her neck, and says, “Make more.” Gabriella laughs.

Meanwhile, on a subway platform, a fan sees Larry across the way. Odd note: the subway is Hingston Avenue, which is in Montreal, though they’re clearly supposed to be in New York? Confusing. Anyway, she tells him she’s so sad about what happened to Lestat. She figures out they’re making an album, and continues to shout at him across the platform as the train passes by. He stops her, telling her he’s not in the band anymore, and maybe there is no band, and that he’s very tired. She apologizes, and another subway passenger talks to him: it’s Armand.

“She’s right, you do look tired,” Armand says. “You should probably get some rest.”

Larry, after a little mind push, agrees he needs some rest, and walks out in front of an oncoming train. Armand sits there calmly as the fan across the way screams. Armand for his part, looks zoned out. Is he in charge? Or is he too being controlled, perhaps by Marius? Or Akasha? Or both?

We’ll see you next week when the tour heads to Montreal, which is where Hingston Avenue actually is.

The Vampire Lestat Premiere Dates And Episode Guide:

New episodes of The Vampire Lestat premiere on Sundays on AMC and AMC+, starting June 7, 2026.
