Weeksville Heritage Center is hosting an evening of community conversation about the impact of deed theft this week. The public program will include firsthand accounts from those who have fought to maintain ownership of their property as well as information from advocates about the tools available to stop deed theft.<\/p>\n

The public program on Thursday, July 9 will, fittingly, begin with a tour of the historic Hunterfly Road Houses<\/a> and the inspiring history of Weeksville and Black homeownership in 19th century Brooklyn. After the tour the participants will move into the (air conditioned) heritage center building for an evening of conversation.<\/p>\n

The event, The Power of the Story: Neighbors Share How Brooklyn Fought Deed Theft, is free and open to the public. The tour begins at 5:30 p.m. while the deed theft<\/a> discussion will begin at 6 p.m. For more information on the event and to R.S.V.P., visit the event page online<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those with a personal story can also choose to share their tale as part of an oral history project. Those interested in participating can sign up online<\/a> or in person at the event. Interviews will take place at a later date.<\/p>\n
