A seaplane carrying eight people made a hard landing in New York City’s East River on Sunday, prompting a large emergency response but resulting in only minor injuries, according to city officials. Emergency crews rescued everyone aboard after the aircraft came to rest upright in the water near Manhattan.

The New York City Fire Department said it received a report shortly after noon of a seaplane that had made a hard landing in the river. Firefighters and other first responders removed all eight occupants from the aircraft. Officials said two people suffered minor injuries but declined additional medical treatment at the scene. The plane was later towed back to a nearby dock.

The aircraft was identified by the Federal Aviation Administration as a Kodiak 100 seaplane. Federal officials said the hard landing caused a wing strut to break. The FAA confirmed it has opened an investigation to determine what led to the incident.

Officials said the aircraft had departed from East Hampton before returning toward Manhattan. Air traffic recordings captured a mayday call as emergency responders converged on the scene. Images from the river showed the seaplane leaning to one side with part of a wing touching the water while rescue boats surrounded the aircraft.

Authorities said the aircraft remained afloat following the landing, allowing first responders to safely evacuate everyone on board. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, weather conditions and other factors as they work to determine the cause of the hard landing.
