Upon arrival, units determined that two columns had buckled on the 21st floor. No injuries have been reported.

The New York Police Department received a separate 911 call at 8:11 a.m. reporting an unstable structure. Construction workers on the 21st floor told police they saw the columns beginning to buckle. All workers were safely evacuated.

Metro Loft Management and David Werner Real Estate Investments are leading the conversion, which also includes the adjacent tower at 219 East 42nd Street.

“We are aware of what happened and are working closely with the Department of Buildings to understand the full scope of the situation,” MetroLoft said in a statement. “The safety of our workers and the public has always been, and remains, our top priority.”

An exterior view from the courtyard of the Pfizer building at 219-235 East 42nd Street under construction in New York, US, on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025. Pfizer vacated the building in 2023 after relocating to a new headquarters at Hudson Yards on Manhattan’s West Side.

The project is among several reshaping the office stock of Midtown Manhattan as developers convert aging office towers into apartments amid a broader US housing shortage. Gensler, the architecture firm on the job, has called the building’s mixed 1960s-era structural systems a uniquely difficult retrofit, with contractors working to pour a new floor every few days to try to meet the 2026 opening.

Copyright 2026 Bloomberg.

The most important insurance news,in your inbox every business day.

Get the insurance industry’s trusted newsletter

Construction crews were pulled from a 37-story Midtown Manhattan building Tuesday morning after bricks were reported falling from…

[35
449,22117,75,84,83,9,24,63,110852
post-290000","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-manhattan","tag-building-collapse","tag-commercial-property","tag-manhattan","tag-manhattan-headlines","tag-manhattan-news","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-residential-contractors
["GET
