Edgewater officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 7 p.m. reporting a man sleeping inside a vehicle in an apartment complex, according to Edgewater Police Chief Donald Martin.\u00a0Patrol Officers Muntaser Hajjaj and Nicholas Diaz found a 2024 Hyundai Elantra stopped in the roadway, blocking access to the parking lot, Martin said.<\/p>\n
The driver, Kevin Negit, 37, of Fairview, was asleep in the driver’s seat. When officers woke him, he was holding a pill in his hand, according to police.\u00a0As Negit stepped out of the vehicle, several vials of suspected crack cocaine fell to the ground, police said. After officers conducted field sobriety tests, Negit was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and possession of crack cocaine.<\/p>\n
Negit was charged with third-degree possession of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance. He also received summonses for operating a motor vehicle while in possession of a narcotic, implied consent to provide breath samples, reckless driving, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and operating under the influence of liquor or drugs, authorities said. He\u00a0was taken to the Bergen County Jail and turned over to the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, police said.<\/p>\n
