Cheryl’s Global Soul has been a gathering place in Prospect Heights for more than two decades, serving homemade comfort food, showcasing local artists and bringing neighbors together.<\/p>\n
Owner and chef Cheryl Smith now says the beloved restaurant’s future is uncertain.<\/p>\n
“When people come here, I want them to feel like they’ve come home. Culture, one plate at a time and love in every plate. The thought of not being here hurts my heart – I built this for people,” Smith said.<\/p>\n
The restaurant, known for dishes like its homemade pancakes and maple syrup and its welcoming atmosphere, has weathered years of challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and rising food costs. But Smith says a significant rent increase, additional fees and a looming deadline tied to a new lease have put the business in jeopardy.<\/p>\n
“We are that neighborhood spot that does dishes one pot at a time, and quite honestly, it’s become harder and harder to generate the money,” Smith said.<\/p>\n
Smith’s struggle reflects broader challenges facing small businesses across New York City.<\/p>\n
According to a recent report from the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the city lost more than 1,000 businesses during one quarter last year.<\/p>\n
In response, Smith launched a GoFundMe campaign to help keep the restaurant open. As of this week, the fundraiser has surpassed 86% of its $70,000 goal.<\/p>\n
Customers say Cheryl’s Global Soul is more than just a place to grab a meal.<\/p>\n
“We should be supporting our local businesses with the high prices, tariffs, gas, oil, everything,” said customer Omar Chandler. “And it’s good – my food today was delicious and I’m coming back tonight!”<\/p>\n
Others say the restaurant plays an important role in the neighborhood’s economy and sense of community.<\/p>\n
“I’d rather come to a local thing when I can. Without Cheryl’s, that’s less money going into this part of our community,” said customer Djaz.<\/p>\n
Despite the uncertainty, Smith says the support she’s received from customers, neighbors and long-time patrons has kept her motivated.<\/p>\n
“Every day, in every way, someone is telling me, \u2018Keep going, we love you,\u2019” Smith said.<\/p>\n
For now, Smith says the fight to save Cheryl’s Global Soul continues.
