Looking for a spot to cool off on a hot summer day? Heading to the beach may sound like a good idea \u2014 but just be sure to pick the right one. <\/p>\n
Often after periods of heavy rain, bacteria levels in some water exceeds limits set by state or local health departments. That means the beach has to close until testing shows those bacteria level go back down.<\/p>\n
With the heavy bouts of rain that fell earlier this week, some spots are still dealing with elevated bacteria levels, making swimming off-limits for now.<\/p>\n
See below for a breakdown of beaches closed for Friday:<\/p>\n
New York City:<\/p>\n
The only closure for New York City beaches on Friday at the Whitestone Boosters Civic Association in Queens. All other city beaches were open, though 16 were under advisories, which occurs under the following conditions:<\/p>\n
Rainfall exceeds rainfall thresholds.<\/p>\n
Water sample results do not meet beach water quality standards for swimming.<\/p>\n
Sanitary survey or investigation reveals the presence of pollution (floatable debris, medical or infectious waste, toxic contaminants, petroleum products, other contamination, or evidence of sewage and wastewater discharge).<\/p>\n
For a full map showing the status of all NYC beaches, click here.<\/a><\/p>\n Westchester County:<\/p>\n Most beaches in Westchester County were open, with the exception of the following locations where routine water quality testing detected bacteria levels exceeding New York State health standards, according to the county health department<\/a>:<\/p>\n Croton Point Park Beach<\/p>\n Philipse Manor Beach<\/p>\n Hudson Park East Beach<\/p>\n
