Each artist will receive a $12,500 unrestricted award, along with free rehearsal space and performance and curatorial opportunities to support the next stage of their careers.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-768x512.jpeg\" alt=\"Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Fellowship 2026-27\" class=\"wp-image-591374\" style=\"width:768px;height:auto\"  \/>Merikara (left) and Alana Amore Colvin, 2026-27 Jazz Leaders Fellows<\/p>\n<p>Merikara is a contemporary jazz vocalist whose music draws from blues, hip-hop, R&amp;B and gospel. She has performed at several notable venues and festivals, including Newark Symphony Hall, SOB\u2019s, the Lincoln Park Music Festival and Maplewoodstock. Beyond the stage, she works in children\u2019s music education, community organizing and nonprofit initatives focused on cultural empowerment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/unnamed-1-768x1151.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-591375\" style=\"width:474px;height:auto\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Contemporary jazz vocalist Merikara<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn-based guitarist Alana Amore Colvin blends avant-garde jazz with Afro-folkloric traditions. They are recognized for their ability to balance intimate melodies with experimental textures. colvin performs with Ryan Easter\u2019s Trap Music Orchestra and several improvisational projects. Their debut EP,\u00a0huckleberries &amp; lullabies, is available on most streaming platforms except Spotify.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-2-768x511.jpeg\" alt=\"Brooklyn-based guitarist alana amore colvin\" class=\"wp-image-591376\"  \/>Brooklyn-based guitarist alana amore colvin<\/p>\n<p>Now in its sixth year, the fellowship supports emerging Black women and Black non-binary jazz musicians in New York City. The program began selecting two recipients each year in 2021 and has awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/2025\/07\/15\/brooklyn-conservatory-of-music-names-winners-of-fifth-annual-12500-jazz-leaders-fellowship\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fellowships<\/a> to 12 artists.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m grateful that this fellowship exists\u2014not only because it gives up-and-coming musicians the spaces and resources to develop their artistry, but because it has created an intricate network\u2014a family\u2014within the jazz scenes of BKCM, Brooklyn and NYC as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>BKCM Executive Director Chad Cooper<\/p>\n<p>Founded by German immigrants in 1897, BKCM has provided music education to thousands of New Yorkers.
