{"id":293931,"date":"2026-07-12T19:22:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T19:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/293931\/"},"modified":"2026-07-12T19:22:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T19:22:07","slug":"new-york-hammered-with-cyclosporiasis-hudson-valley-spared-so-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/293931\/","title":{"rendered":"New York hammered with cyclosporiasis\u2014Hudson Valley spared so far"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HUDSON VALLEY- Although hundreds of cyclosporiasis cases, which can cause severe diarrhea, have recently been reported in the New York City metropolitan area, the Hudson Valley has not seen the sharp increase affecting the Big Apple.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/php\/surveillance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC) said Friday that nearly 400 cases have been reported, with roughly two-thirds of those affecting the five boroughs.<\/p>\n<p>Since May 1, the CDC has confirmed 843 domestic cyclosporiasis cases statewide, with another 1,500 cases still under review.<\/p>\n<p>More than 30 states recorded illness claims. The CDC said it saw an increase in cases over the past couple of weeks compared to the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>In Putnam County, Public Health Nurse Supervisor Jean Ralston told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhnn.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mid-Hudson News<\/a>: \u201cThe Putnam County Department of Health has had three confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis so far this year, with a potential fourth one currently under investigation. These numbers are not unusual and are similar to previous years, which show cases typically occur in June, July, and August.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ralston said the health department recorded six cases last year, all during those three months. \u201cAt this point, we are not seeing anything out of the ordinary,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Ralston had general summertime advice for residents.<\/p>\n<p>Safe food handling is always important as several illnesses can occur with contaminated food and water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo\u00a0protect yourself from any foodborne illness,\u00a0it is important to wash\u00a0your\u00a0hands,\u00a0and\u00a0all produce carefully\u00a0under running water. This applies\u00a0before cutting,\u00a0cooking\u00a0and eating\u00a0them and applies to all\u00a0herbs,\u00a0fruits,\u00a0and vegetables. With firm fruits and vegetables such\u00a0as melons and cucumbers,\u00a0be sure to scrub\u00a0them\u00a0with a clean produce brush\u00a0before slicing.
