WASHINGTON \u2014 Sen. Mitch McConnell on Sunday broke his silence<\/a> on his hospital stay with a statement issued by his office claiming he fell but didn\u2019t suffer a stroke or heart attack \u2014 and it included a photo of the politician smiling for extra measure.<\/p>\n

The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican, who was hospitalized June 14<\/a> during what dispatchers suspected was a cardiac event, released the statement the day after Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), 71, suddenly died of heart issues \u2014 and following weeks of relative radio silence from McConnell\u2019s camp.<\/p>\n

The Kentucky pol suffered \u201cminor injuries\u201d in his fall but then contracted pneumonia, which complicated his health situation, the statement said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy doctors have confirmed that I didn\u2019t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn\u2019t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don\u2019t have any tumors or hemorrhages,\u201d McConnell said in the statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I\u2019ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.\u201d<\/p>\n

McConnell\u2019s doctors attributed his fall to his\u00a0post-polio condition. At the age of 2, he contracted polio, and since then, his\u00a0upper left leg has suffered from paralysis.<\/p>\n

The Office of the Attending Physician for the senator added, \u201cEarly in his hospitalization, he developed pneumonia, which responded rapidly to antibiotic treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe remainder of his hospital stay focused on physical therapy and strategies to reduce his risk of future falls. He has been medically cleared to continue fully participating in his intensive physical therapy program.\u201d<\/p>\n

The release included a photo of McConnell propped up in a hospital bed with his wife Elaine Chao by his side.<\/p>\n

McConnell\u2019s absence and the previous lack of a clear explanation from his team about it had sent the rumor mill into overdrive for weeks about his condition. <\/p>\n

Key McConnell allies such as former aide Scott Jennings and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) tried to downplay the hoopla by saying they had spoken with him<\/a> during his hospital stay, but their statements did little to quiet suspicious critics.<\/p>\n

McConnell said in his statement Sunday that, much to his chagrin, his recovery process will take time, adding that \u201con the advice of my doctors, I won\u2019t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut rest assured that, in the meantime, I\u2019m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve been working closely with my legislative staff on current issues, and with my Kentucky team who help me provide timely constituent services across our Commonwealth.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he has been able to move from hospital care to a\u00a0rehabilitation center since the fall.<\/p>\n

For the time being, because of his absence and\u00a0the death of Graham,\u00a0the GOP\u2019s Senate majority will functionally be\u00a0at\u00a051-47 for the short-term. McConnell is the longest-serving Senate leader of any party in the upper chamber\u2019s\u00a0history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u00a0has\u00a0suffered multiple health scares in the past. In 2023, for example, McConnell froze\u00a0up\u00a0several times mid-speech after\u00a0suffering\u00a0a concussion and minor rib fracture\u00a0<\/a>from\u00a0a fall at a fundraiser at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, DC, earlier that year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WASHINGTON \u2014 Sen.
