A crowd of spiffy young hepcats and dames showed up in full period 1940s dress when Turner Classic Movies host Eddie Muller kicked off the first ever NYC edition of his long-running Los Angeles \u201cNoir City\u201d film festival on Friday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Circulating among the dressed-to-the-nines flick fans at Netflix\u2019s Paris Theater to catch the black-and-white double feature was former Focus Features CEO and Oscar-nominated screenwriter James Schamus (\u201cThe Ice Storm,\u201d \u201cHulk\u201d), \u201cAfter Hours\u201d producer and \u201cMean Streets\u201d actress Amy Robinson, true crime author T.J. English and Netflix\u2019s movie programming big cheese John Vanco.<\/p>\n

The theme of the film noir fest is \u201cFace The Music,\u201d and the evening began with a screening of 1941\u2019s \u201cBlues in the Night,\u201d which Muller called, \u201cOne of the weirdest movies I\u2019ve ever shown.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope there aren\u2019t too many people who have done drugs before coming tonight,\u201d Muller quipped of the film about a jazz band\u2019s rise and fall with some truly mind-bending montages by the late Don Siegel.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s New York,\u201d the fest\u2019s co-host Elizabeth Bougerol chimed in of the possibility people were on any mind-altering substances.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The evening began with a screening of 1941\u2019s \u201cBlues in the Night,\u201d MJ O’Toole<\/p>\n

(For film buffs: The late Siegel was the head of Warner Bros.\u2019 montage department, and he worked on the opening sequence in \u201cCasablanca.\u201d He later won two Oscars for short films, which launched his directing career and he then made five features with Clint Eastwood, including \u201cDirty Harry.\u201d)<\/p>\n
\u201cBlues in the Night\u201d was directed by Anatole Litvak, who Muller said was, \u201cFor some reason\u2026 overlooked amongst the great European immigrants who came to Hollywood in the 1930s. But he was a masterful filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bougerol \u2014 in a chic white suit \u2014 performed with her jazz band during an intermission, and the second film that screened to the sold-out crowd was \u201cBlack Angel\u201d from 1946.<\/p>\n
