A National Football League employee wounded in the mass shooting in the lobby of the league\u2019s Midtown Manhattan headquarters<\/a> is suing the city for $24 million<\/a>, claiming it was negligence by the slain NYPD detective working security that allowed the gunman to carry out the bloody massacre.<\/a><\/p>\n

According to Craig Clementi,<\/a> newly released footage of the July 28, 2025, shooting shows \u201cthe actions and inactions\u201d of NYPD Det. Didarul Islam, who was off-duty and working as a security guard at the building on Park Ave. near E. 51st St.<\/a>, enabled shooter Shane Tamura<\/a> to storm into the lobby and kill Islam along with three others.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn short, the video evidence provides a good faith basis to assert that Detective Islam\u2019s inattentiveness and negligence allowed the gunman to walk across the building\u2019s plaza with a visible assault rifle and into the building; all without the gunman being detected, deterred, confronted, neutralized and without building\/lobby occupants being warned of the approachingdanger,\u201d the lawsuit<\/a> states.<\/p>\n

At the time, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Islam, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant and father of three.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was doing the job that we asked him to do,\u201d Tisch said. \u201cHe put himself in harm\u2019s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city. He died as he lived, a hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

Islam was on the force for more than three years, assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx.<\/p>\n

Attached filings state that Islam was standing at the lobby entrance in uniform as Tamura, 27, walked roughly 100 feet across the building\u2019s outside plaza, with an M4 rifle in hand. It\u2019s not clear if Islam appeared to see Tamura before gunfire erupted.<\/p>\n

Clementi, who works for the NFL as a senior director of labor finance, said he \u201cwas shot at close range\u201d in the side and lower back about 10 feet away from Islam, who was fatally wounded by Tamura.<\/p>\n

Despite the \u201cgrievous gunshot wound,\u201d Clementi managed to flee through the building\u2019s shattered revolving door before locating NYPD officers on the street and calling 911.<\/p>\n

After lying bleeding on the sidewalk, Clementi was rushed by medics to New York-Presbyterian\/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was put in the ICU and underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments.<\/p>\n

Clementi suffered a lumbar vertebral fracture and was hospitalized for 10 days. Once discharged, he required \u201chome wound care nursing and physical therapy,\u201d one document states.<\/p>\n

\u201cI bear permanent depressed scars from the wound and I experience pain every day,\u201d Clementi wrote in an attached filing<\/a>. \u201cSince the shooting, I have also suffered from severe psychological trauma, including multiple daily flashbacks to the incident, hypervigilance, and significant disruption to my daily life and professional activities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city Law Department declined to comment on the lawsuit. The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Clementi\u2019s attorney David Scher said they are not commenting at this time.<\/p>\n

Along with Islam, Tamura killed an investment management company executive and mother of two, Wesley LePatner, 43, \u201cbeloved\u201d security guard Aland Etienne, 46, and Cornell graduate Julia Hyman, 27.<\/p>\n

While Tamura\u2019s motive remains under investigation, authorities believe he intended to target the NFL offices inside the high-rise but used the wrong elevator bank after wreaking havoc in the lobby. He again opened fire on the 33rd floor, killing Hyman, who worked as an associate for Rudin Management, before shooting himself in the chest, cops said.<\/p>\n

Tamura played high school football in Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valley in California, where he grew up. One of his coaches described him to a local newspaper as one of the most talented players he\u2019d ever encountered.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no indication that Tamura played football in college or was drafted by the NFL. The NYPD said he has \u201cno nexus\u201d to the NFL.<\/p>\n

In his suicide note, Tamura wrote about Terry Long, a former offensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who at first was said to have died in 2006 of cerebral meningitis related to the CTE he was suffering from. A coroner later determined he committed suicide by drinking antifreeze.<\/p>\n

\u201cFootball gave me CTE and it cause me to drink a gallon of antifreeze,\u201d Tamura wrote.<\/p>\n
