{"id":295064,"date":"2026-07-14T01:17:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T01:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/295064\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T01:17:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T01:17:09","slug":"courts-officer-recruit-29-dies-after-falling-ill-on-run-less-than-five-days-into-academy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/295064\/","title":{"rendered":"Courts officer recruit, 29, dies after falling ill on run less than five days into academy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A New York State Court Officer recruit died after falling ill during a training run in Brooklyn less than five days into the academy, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Saul Castro, 29, was out for a run near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycourts.gov\/nys-court-officer-candidates\/nys-court-officers-academy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NYS Court Officers Academy<\/a> located at 541 St. Johns Place near Classon Ave. in Crown Heights when he started having trouble breathing Friday morning, according to sources within NY State Courts.<\/p>\n<p>Medics ferried the trainee to a local hospital, where he died the next day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel horrible for the family, horrible for the situation,\u201d said Stephen Mikos, president of the NY State Court Officers Association.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures peaked at 85 degrees in New York City on Friday, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/wrh\/Climate?wfo=okx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Weather Service<\/a>. The office of the city\u2019s medical examiner will determine Castro\u2019s cause of death.<\/p>\n<p>Castro began the recruitment process to become an officer with NYS Courts about six months ago, but he wasn\u2019t sworn in at the academy until the Monday before he fell ill, according to sources.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A New York State Courts Officer is pictured in Manhattan on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2023. Ribeiro for New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>In the short time he was at the academy, Castro built a reputation as someone his fellow recruits could rely on, a source said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy what his fellow classmates were saying about him, he was highly regarded by his other classmates. He was an immediate role model,\u201d the source said. \u201cIt\u2019s an academy, it\u2019s a process.
