Straight Facts\u2122.\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-san-app-download__subtitle\">\n\t\t\tPoint phone camera here\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Power and water concerns<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critics say large data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity, potentially driving up utility bills, while also using <a href=\"https:\/\/san.com\/cc\/after-silence-from-data-centers-texas-asks-again-for-water-use-numbers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">significant amounts of water<\/a> for cooling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/san.com\/cc\/researchers-question-ai-data-centers-eye-popping-energy-demands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">As Straight Arrow<\/a> previously reported, some large data centers consume more electricity than entire cities, putting additional strain on the nation\u2019s power grid.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tUnbiased. Straight Facts.TM<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York has a total of 133 data centers spread across 17 markets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Fact-Card-State-New-York.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-615304\" style=\"width:100px\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs data center development threatens to hike up utility bills, deplete our natural resources, and create uncertainty for New Yorkers, it\u2019s my responsibility to take action and lead,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/14\/hochul-to-approve-nations-first-state-level-data-center-pause-00995561\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hochul said.<\/a> \u201cNew York will lead the way in creating the strongest standards in the nation for data center development, ensuring that when companies succeed because of New York, New Yorkers succeed too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Projects that have already received permits will not be affected. The order also includes exemptions for smaller facilities and those built for research, education and health care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hochul\u2019s executive order comes just after the state legislature approved a similar one-year moratorium that she has not yet signed or vetoed. Her executive action allows the pause to take effect immediately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI companies, developers, some business groups and labor unions are expected to oppose the move.<\/p>\n<p>New Yorkers weigh in<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/sri.siena.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SNY0626-Release-Crosstabs.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Siena College poll<\/a> found 46% of respondents support a one-year moratorium on new permits for large data centers, while 21% oppose it. Another 33% were undecided or had no opinion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mitch Jones, managing director for policy and litigation at Food &amp; Water Watch, praised the decision. \u201cThis is an important victory for the thousands of New Yorkers who demanded that their government take action to put a pause on hyperscale data centers,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2026\/07\/14\/new-york-becomes-first-state-impose-data-center-moratorium\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politico reported Hochul\u2019s move could become a blueprint for other governors grappling with the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/AP26194770595260.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-615289\"  \/>AP Photo\/Seth Wenig, File<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the moratorium, state regulators will develop new standards, including environmental review requirements before permits are approved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Economic development officials will also create a \u201ccommunity investment framework\u201d to help local governments evaluate future data center proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Other states\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While New York trails states such as Virginia and Texas in data center development, several proposed projects have already sparked local opposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hochul has also urged lawmakers to repeal sales tax exemptions currently available to data center developers, according to The Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, Maine Gov. Janet Mills recently <a href=\"https:\/\/mainemorningstar.com\/2026\/04\/24\/gov-mills-vetoes-landmark-data-center-ban\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vetoed an 18-month moratorium<\/a> on large-scale data center development, saying it could jeopardize projects with local support.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-1746055151.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-615290\"  \/>Scott Eisen\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Federal stance<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration has argued that restricting data center construction could leave the U.S. behind in the global AI race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House has instead promoted its voluntary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/releases\/2026\/03\/ratepayer-protection-pledge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ratepayers Protection Pledge<\/a>, aimed at limiting electricity cost increases tied to data center growth.
