WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump backed off his proposed 20% toll on all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz <\/a>Tuesday in favor of investment in the US by Persian Gulf states.<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0said\u00a0in a Truth Social post<\/a>\u00a0the reversal\u00a0was \u201c[b]ased on highly productive conversations with Middle East Leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose Investments will be MASSIVE but, at the same time, extraordinarily good for them, and their future,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Trump also claimed that exports of oil were \u201cflowing like never before\u201d thanks to recent US airstrikes on Iran, and \u201cthe Strait of Hormuz is open to All Ship traffic except for Iran \u2014 and that is because of their lying, violent, malicious leadership, which is taking them down the path of TOTAL DESTRUCTION.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will therefore have a FULL Blockade, but only on Ships coming to and from Iranian ports, or carrying anything have to do with Iranian cargo,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Trump announced the new tolling scheme on Monday, declaring that the US would be the \u201cguardian\u201d of the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and would collect a reimbursement equal to 20%\u00a0of\u00a0all cargo value, which one shipping industry\u00a0expert predicted\u00a0could amount to\u00a0$200 billion annually.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll become the guardian of the strait. Maybe we\u2019ll call it the guardian angel of the strait, and we should be reimbursed for that,\u201d Trump had suggested during an interview on \u201cFox & Friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

US Central Command began offensive strikes on Iran\u2019s drone and missile capabilities on July 7 <\/a>after Tehran hit commercial ships seeking to transit the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

That derailed negotiations following a\u00a014-point memorandum of understanding <\/a>that the US and Iran agreed to last month, which allowed for the reopening of the critical oil chokepoint.<\/p>\n

A two-month US naval blockade was ended in exchange for \u201csafe passage\u201d of all ships \u2014 but Trump accused the Iranians of reneging on their end of the deal once one-way attack drones began hitting commercial vessels last week.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, I think it\u2019s over. I don\u2019t want to deal with them anymore. They\u2019re scum,\u201d the president\u00a0told reporters<\/a>\u00a0last Wednesday at a meeting of NATO heads of state and government in Turkey.<\/p>\n

Since then, US forces have been hitting the Islamic Republic <\/a>in an effort \u201cto further degrade Iran\u2019s ability to attack commercial shipping,\u201d\u00a0CENTCOM said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The naval blockade will also be reinstated as of 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
