BOROUGHWIDE \u2014 June\u2019s surge in Democratic Socialists of America victories has created an unusual political paradox in the ongoing battle to take over one of the nation\u2019s most influential Democratic organizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While reform-aligned candidates built momentum inside a party they have spent years critiquing, creating a dramatic shift, Borough President and New Kings Democrats Founder Antonio Reynoso did not benefit from the same energy, soundly losing a congressional race to DSA Claire Valdez.<\/p>\n

The new landscape still raises the burning question: Will Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn \u2014 the first woman, Black woman and Haitian American to lead the party and a reformer herself \u2014 want to remain chair?\u00a0<\/p>\n

The winner will not just lead a local county organization\u00a0<\/p>\n

The party represents more than 1.2 million Democrats across America\u2019s most diverse borough, combining grassroots power \u2014 such as District Leader and County Committee seats \u2014 with the upper echelons of Democratic politics, from judicial nominations to state and citywide elections, to national figures rooted in Brooklyn\u2019s political orbit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bichotte Hermelyn\u2019s ability to combine grassroots reach and gain institutional power has made Brooklyn Democratic politics bigger, more visible and more competitive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFor generations, Brooklyn had a clouded legacy. With our political power perceived as being built behind backrooms through patronage,\u201d Bichotte Hermelyn said. \u201cOver the past decade, we did not just become more visible, inclusive, equitable and transparent \u2014 we became sexy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Carrying the analogy further, current leadership in the Brooklyn Democratic organization continually faces this question: How do pious reformers responsibly lead a party they have long criticized, especially now that it\u2019s become \u201csexy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Reformers have run on a rhetoric that casts Brooklyn\u2019s Democratic organization as insider-driven and disconnected from everyday voters. \u201cNothing could be further from the truth,\u201d said Bichotte Hermelyn.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bichotte Hermelyn added, \u201cAll of my allies \u2014 even including some of the DSA members who support my leadership \u2014 argue that even though I inherited that old stigma, I was able to radically transform the party over the past six years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Supporters say the party was bolstered by strong financial stability, increased visibility, broader inclusion and a party central to national Democratic politics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more relevant the party became, the more valuable it was to control,\u201d added Bichotte Hermelyn.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reformers argue the county organization still holds too much influence over judicial politics, candidate support and internal party structure. Meanwhile, current supporters cite the leader\u2019s changes increasing transparency. As the New York Law Journal reported, Brooklyn led New York in transforming judicial elections by \u201cadding another layer of review for the potential nominees\u201d and creating a community-first approach.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018The Iowa of New York politics\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since 2020, Brooklyn has become a proving ground in New York Democratic politics. One party insider called Brooklyn \u201cthe Iowa of New York Democratic politics,\u201d but Bichotte Hermelyn said, \u201cthe stakes extend far beyond internal party politics.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

New York\u2019s general election is approaching on Nov. 3, with Gov. Kathy Hochul seeking reelection and Republicans looking for openings on affordability, crime and Democratic infighting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Brooklyn is home to House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and the party is a political foundation from which national Democrats are expected to fight, govern and win.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAre reformers trying to dismantle \u2018the machine\u2019 or inherit the party that I rebuilt and reformed?\u201d Bichotte Hermelyn asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI welcome more reform \u2026 because I drastically reformed the party,\u201d Bichotte Hermelyn continued. \u201cBut reform does not just mean replacing elected leaders. Real reform means real representation, transparency, accountability and respect for the communities that make up Brooklyn.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

To Bichotte Hermelyn, embracing the borough\u2019s diversity became \u201cthe party\u2019s strength,\u201d while others \u201cshied away from a management problem.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCampaigning against a machine is one thing. Governing a coalition fairly is another,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The successor bears responsibility for steering a stable, nation-leading organization, and that responsibility includes balancing the vastly differing needs of Brooklyn\u2019s diverse stakeholders.<\/p>\n

Demographics who call the party home hail from across the spectrum, including Black, white, Caribbean, Jewish, Muslim, Latinx, Asian, immigrants, LGBTQ+, progressive, moderate, working-class, union, tenant, homeowner, small business owners and \u201cmany more, all at once,\u201d Bichotte Hermelyn said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Democrats can build a coalition here, they can build one anywhere,\u201d an insider said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Even opponents concede that Bichotte Hermelyn made the Brooklyn Democratic Party more interesting, visible and equitable. Now, every Democrat seeking to shape the party\u2019s future must prove they can keep it strong.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whatever happens next, whoever leads the party in the future will be standing on the \u201csexy\u201d structure Bichotte Hermelyn built.<\/p>\n
