Zohran Mamdani\u2019s historic election<\/a> in the New York City mayoral race Tuesday sent President Donald Trump and his allies into immediate hysterics, with figures on the MAGA right like House Speaker Mike Johnson lamenting the \u201cdangerous\u201d democratic socialist\u2014and seeking to cast him as the figurehead of a Democratic Party that has so far only tentatively embraced him. \u201cDemocrats in New York City have chosen a true extremist and Marxist,\u201d the House speaker posted<\/a>, \u201cand the consequences will be felt across our entire nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other MAGA figures joined the pile-on: \u201cWe have a major Islam problem in America,\u201d the racist conspiracy theorist and Trump adviser Lara Loomer posted<\/a> on X. (Loomer appeared particularly incensed that Mamdani quoted the labor activist and socialist presidential candidate Eugene Debs in his victory speech: \u201cMamdani is an enemy combatant,\u201d she wrote<\/a>.) \u201cCongratulations NYC,\u201d wrote Arizona Congressman Andy Biggs. \u201cYou just elected an official who despises America and everything our Republic stands for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Billionaire investor Bill Ackman, a Trump supporter who spent big against Mamdani, was notably cordial after the results were called: \u201cCongrats on the win,\u201d he posted<\/a>, telling Mamdani he had a \u201cbig responsibility\u201d and offering to help the mayor-elect. But most in MAGA world sounded a bleaker note. \u201cRIP NYC,\u201d Utah Senator Mike Lee added<\/a>, along with a crying emoji. \u201cJoin me for a moment of silence for NYC,\u201d wrote<\/a> Texas Governor Greg Abbott. \u201cThoughts & prayers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The right-wing freakout has been going since June, when Mamdani\u2019s upset win<\/a> in the Democratic primary put him on track to become the first Muslim mayor of America\u2019s largest city\u2014and one whose unabashedly progressive politics seemed to make even some in his own party\u2019s establishment nervous. \u201cReview every naturalization of the past 30 years\u2014starting with Mamdani,\u201d Florida Republican Randy Fine told<\/a> the New York Post last month. \u201cIf there is any fraud or any violation of the rules we need to denaturalize and deport.\u201d (After Mamdani\u2019s victory, Fine posted<\/a> that \u201cNew York City has fallen,\u201d and \u201cAmerica is next if we don\u2019t stop it.\u201d) In addition to baseless suggestions of terrorist ties and calls to deport him, Republicans like Andy Ogles have fantasized about ways they can keep Mamdani from assuming office.<\/p>\n
