NEW YORK (PIX11) \u2014 A foodborne illness is making waves across New York City as health officials say cases have spiked approximately threefold<\/a> compared to this time last year.<\/p>\n

The cyclosporiasis outbreak is caused by a microscopic parasite that can contaminate food and water<\/a>, including raspberries, lettuce, and other produce.<\/p>\n

The most common symptom reported is watery diarrhea, which can be frequent. Other symptoms can include a loss of appetite, weight loss, bloating, nausea, and fatigue.<\/p>\n

Symptoms typically begin around one week after exposure; however, they can occur between 2 and 14 days after exposure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n

The CDC warns that symptoms can relapse, and the remitting-relapsing course can last from a few days to a month or longer.<\/p>\n

While severe, the CDC states that the illness is “not usually life-threatening.”<\/p>\n

Anyone with prolonged or watery diarrhea lasting more than a few days should see a clinician.<\/p>\n

How can I prevent getting cyclosporiasis?<\/p>\n

Health officials advise washing hands with soap and water before and after handling or preparing raw fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n

When preparing produce, consumers should:<\/p>\n

wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking<\/p>\n

scrub firm fruits and vegetables, such as melons and cucumbers, with a clean produce brush<\/p>\n

cut away any damaged or bruised areas on fruits and vegetables before preparing and eating<\/p>\n

What is the current number of cyclosporiasis cases in New York?<\/p>\n

As of Tuesday, the New York State Department of Health and the New York City Health Department say 381 cases have been reported in New York City so far this year, approximately a threefold increase compared with the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n
