On July 14, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., New York State Police responded to a reported drowning in Little Sodus Bay in the village of Fair Haven, Cayuga County.<\/p>\n
The preliminary investigation determined that a 70-year-old man entered the water from a boat to cool off. Due to high winds, the boat drifted away and he was unable to return. A 69-year-old woman entered the water in an attempt to assist him. During the incident, the man went underwater and did not resurface. The woman was subsequently rescued by a nearby boater.<\/p>\n
Search efforts included the Fair Haven Volunteer Fire Department, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Coast Guard, and the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team (URT).<\/p>\n
The victim was subsequently located and recovered by the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team. The Cayuga Coroner was notified and responded to the scene.<\/p>\n
The New York State Police were also assisted by the Fair Haven Village Ambulance, the Ira Fire Department and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit (Air 1).\u00a0<\/p>\n
The investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n

Search efforts are currently underway involving the Cayuga County Sheriff\u2019s Office Marine Patrol, the Wayne County Sheriff\u2019s Office Marine Patrol, the Fair Haven Fire Department boat team, United States Coast Guard, and the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team (URT). Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation are also assisting at the scene.<\/p>\n
The investigation remains ongoing.
