The New York Times is facing a threatened shareholder lawsuit over its coverage of former Democratic Senate candidate<\/a> Graham Platner, Israel and other politically charged stories.<\/p>\n

The National Center for Public Policy Research warned Tuesday that it will sue<\/a> unless the newspaper turns over records within a week, alleging directors failed to oversee the Gray Lady\u2019s editorial standards and corrections practices.<\/p>\n

The demand cites the Times\u2019 June 4 article on Platner, a May opinion essay by Nicholas Kristof<\/a> that included allegations of sexual abuse in Israeli detention and the paper\u2019s coverage of Israel-related political stories as evidence of what it calls a broader pattern of inconsistent editorial standards.<\/p>\n

News of the threatened shareholder suit was first reported by the Washington Free Beacon.<\/a><\/p>\n

The June 4 Platner piece drew criticism from<\/a> people who said the Times downplayed allegations against the far-left pol.<\/p>\n

The story described former girlfriends\u2019 relationships with Platner as \u201cunsettling\u201d and \u201creckless.\u201d It included allegations from Lyndsey Fifield saying Platner had twisted her arm behind her back<\/a> and locked her in a room \u2014 but the authors said they \u201ccould not corroborate\u201d all of the accusations, leaving some out, according to the suit.<\/p>\n

The controversy intensified a month later after Jenny Racicot \u2014 who had also spoken with Times reporters before the article was published \u2014 alleged in a Politico<\/a> interview that Platner sexually assaulted her in 2021.<\/p>\n

According to Racicot, he allegedly entered her home uninvited and forced her to have sex despite her repeated objections. Platner has denied the accusation.<\/p>\n

Platner won Maine\u2019s Democratic Senate primary but suspended his campaign days later. He formally withdrew from the race last week.<\/a><\/p>\n

The shareholder demand also points to a May opinion column by Kristof<\/a> that alleged Palestinian detainees were subject to sexual abuse by Israeli prison guards and soldiers.<\/p>\n

The essay drew fierce backlash<\/a> from the Israeli government, which denounced it as a \u201cblood libel\u201d <\/a>and announced plans to pursue a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper.<\/p>\n

The Times stood by the column, saying it had been carefully fact-checked<\/a> and that Kristof\u2019s reporting was supported by on-the-record interviews and other corroborating material.<\/p>\n

In its demand, NCPPR argues the controversy exposed conflicting public messages from the newspaper\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

The Times called the shareholder demand \u201ca clear attempt to chill First Amendment-protected journalism.\u201d NY Post<\/p>\n

It notes that opinion editor Kathleen Kingsbury publicly defended the piece after saying editors \u201cfound no errors,\u201d while executive editor Joe Kahn later said the newsroom \u201cwouldn\u2019t have done that exact piece.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

The shareholder group contends those differing public statements raise questions about whether the Times\u2019 board adequately oversees the company\u2019s editorial standards.<\/p>\n

The Times rejected the allegations.<\/p>\n
