July 15 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald \u2060Trump \u2060criticized New York \u2060state’s decision to halt construction of large \u200bnew data centers on Wednesday, saying the one-year moratorium would \u200cdrive jobs and tax \u200crevenue to other states.<\/p>\n
“New York State has made \u2060a \u2060terrible decision,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, calling data \u200bcenters “Money Machines” and “LIQUID GOLD” for the states that build them. He said companies seeking to build them would be \u200bcourted by other states including Arizona, Florida, Texas and \u2060Alabama.<\/p>\n
Trump \u2060also warned that the \u2060moratorium \u200brisked ceding ground on artificial intelligence to China and other \u200bcountries, and \u2060he urged New York to change course.<\/p>\n
New York on Tuesday became the first U.S. state to impose such a moratorium, which applies to data centers that \u2060use 50 megawatts or more of power to operate. New \u2060York Governor Kathy Hochul said the facilities threaten to raise utility bills and deplete natural resources.<\/p>\n
The moratorium positions New York at the forefront of a growing national debate over how to manage the infrastructure needed to support AI. While technology companies are racing to build new data \u2060centers, lawmakers and regulators in dozens of states are weighing measures to limit their effect on electricity grids, utility bills and local communities.<\/p>\n
