{"id":296891,"date":"2026-07-15T19:10:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T19:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/296891\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T19:10:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T19:10:11","slug":"nyc-assembly-race-decided-by-hand-recount-after-prior-count-goes-down-to-2-votes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/296891\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Assembly race decided by hand recount after prior count goes down to 2 votes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A hotly contested <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/19\/us-news\/ex-cop-who-derided-socialist-nyc-pols-now-cozying-up-to-mamdani-in-bid-for-lefty-assembly-seat\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Primary for a Queens state legislature seat <\/a>was decided by a recount done by hand Wednesday after a prior count had the candidates separated by only two votes.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Martinez declared victory in a contentious Assembly District 30 primary with a razor-thin seven-vote victory after the recount was completed on Wednesday, his campaign told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez, the endorsed candidate of the Queens Democratic Committee and nephew of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/06\/26\/joe-crowley-loses-democratic-primary-to-political-unknown\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">former borough Dem boss Joe Crowley,<\/a> declared victory with 2,784 votes over Shamsul Haque, an ex-NYPD sergeant, who framed himself as a Mayor Zohran Mamdani-friendly progressive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39991692\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/www-martinezforqueens-com-media-134481147.jpg\" alt=\"Patrick Martinez smiling in front of the 69 Street Subway Station.\" class=\"wp-image-39991692\"  \/>Patrick Martinez won his Assembly District 30 primary after the recount was finished on July 15. Shamsul for Assembly<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to thank the voters who made their voices heard in this election,\u201d Martinez wrote in a statement shared first with The Post. \u201cThis result belongs to you. Whether you voted for me or not, I will represent all of you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo our coalition of labor unions, elected leaders, and every single volunteer who knocked on a door, made a call, or talked to a neighbor: this would not be possible without you. In a race this close, every one of you is the reason we\u2019re here,\u201d he added, also thanking elections officials and giving a hat tip to his opponents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir advocacy made this a better race, and will make me a better representative.
