{"id":297141,"date":"2026-07-15T23:07:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T23:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/297141\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T23:07:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T23:07:21","slug":"west-side-homeless-encampment-outreach-underway-nyc-department-of-homeless-services-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/297141\/","title":{"rendered":"West Side homeless encampment outreach underway, NYC Department of Homeless Services says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York City officials confirmed Wednesday that outreach teams were midway through efforts to help the people at a sprawling West Side homeless encampment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/new-york-city-homeless-encampments-manhattan-zohran-mamdani\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">before dismantling their living spaces<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The city&#8217;s Department of Homeless Services (NYC DHS) confirmed to CBS News New York that the outreach period started on Monday on West 45th Street near 12th Avenue and the Intrepid Museum.<\/p>\n<p>How the outreach period works \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now that NYC DHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-mayor-zohran-mamdani-homeless-encampment-sweeps\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">is in charge of encampment sweeps<\/a>, outreach personnel must show up seven straight days along the same sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the mandated outreach period, anyone who remains risks having their belongings tossed by the Department of Sanitation.<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6-carlin-image.jpg#.jpeg\" alt=\"6-carlin-image.jpg \" height=\"349\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                  New York City outreach teams are trying to convince homeless people on Manhattan&#8217;s West Side to accept housing.<\/p>\n<p>                CBS News New York<\/p>\n<p>CBS News New York reached out to the Department of Sanitation, which said, in an emailed response, to direct our questions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/homeless-encampment-west-side-zohran-mamdani\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday morning, we asked him about the timeline of the outreach process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The notice that is provided &#8230; it indicates both the beginning of the seven-day period and then once that period concludes, that site is cleaned up,&#8221; Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<p>So after the weekend, on Monday or Tuesday, clean sweep day may come to West 45th.<\/p>\n<p>Man declines housing, despite dangers of living on the streets\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Outreach team members wanted one man to take them up on an offer of housing, but he said no, despite the dangers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They gave me the water and it was cool.
