The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast returned to the streets of Williamsburg. <\/p>\n
Now in its 139th year, the tradition honored the Catholic faith and Italian heritage. <\/p>\n
The festivities included the \u201cdancing of the Giglio,\u201d where about 100 men lift a four-ton, 70-foot structure into the summer sky. <\/p>\n
It honors Saint Paulinus, a fifth-century bishop from Nola, Italy. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s faith, family, tradition,\u201d said Joe Cicileo, of Williamsburg. <\/p>\n
Cicileo served as this year\u2019s \u201cNo. 1 capo,\u201d who is the leader of the lifters. <\/p>\n
\u201cI went to school here,\u201d said Cicileo. \u201cSo, I\u2019ve been a part of this feast since I’ve been in school.\u201d <\/p>\n
For many, the feast has been part of their families for generations. <\/p>\n
Paul Modano said this was his second year lifting. He\u2019s following in the footsteps of his father, who participated in the 1990s. <\/p>\n
\u201cMy family is from this neighborhood, and I\u2019m just happy to be here and carry on the tradition,\u201d said Modano. \u201cI hope to do it for a very long time.\u201d <\/p>\n
Lifters said their Catholic faith plays a big part in the Catholic community. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe church is definitely, for us Italians, a very big part of this neighborhood and what it used to be; and I feel like, when this time comes around, everyone comes back,\u201d said Modano. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast returned to the streets of Williamsburg.
