State Sen. Steve Chan (R-Brooklyn) bravely stepped in and defused a violent street brawl between three men in South Brooklyn, according to a video posted to Facebook this week.<\/p>\n
The clip shows Chan, a retired Marine and NYPD sergeant, getting in between a group of men, one bloodied, allegedly after a fistfight.<\/p>\n
\u201cNew Yorkers who are caught in the crosshairs of fights turn away because of fear. Not me,\u201d Chan said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will continue to ensure our streets of South Brooklyn are safe no matter what it takes. Once a cop, always a cop,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to his office, the senator witnessed three men brawling in the street and spotted a knife lying on the ground as he emerged from a meeting.<\/p>\n
Chan, seeing nobody intervening, calmly walked between the men, trying to deescalate the situation as the men continued shouting, with one seen throwing a punch, the footage shows.<\/p>\n
\u201cI took an oath to serve and protect this country \u2014 and this city \u2014and that commitment is something that I take very seriously,\u201d Chan said.<\/p>\n

Cops arrived moments later, former Councilmember Ari Kagan, who posted the video, wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe senator walked into danger instead of staying away from it, bare handed and unarmed \u2013 with calm and steely composure, using the skills he learned as a cop on the streets of the Lower East Side. And took control of the dangerous situation,\u201d Kagan wrote.<\/p>\n
