The Brooklyn Nets could explore trading forward Michael Porter Jr. if both sides aren’t able to agree on a contract extension in the near future, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Michael Porter Jr’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, is scheduled to meet with the Brooklyn Nets and general manager Sean Marks towards the tail end of summer league or at the end of summer league to begin dialogue on an extension,” Haynes reported during a Wednesday appearance on NBA TV’s\u00a0The Association. “Now if it becomes apparent early on that an extension is not in play, then I do believe the next step will be the Brooklyn Nets and Michael Porter Jr. potentially parting ways and potentially looking to move him.”<\/p>\n

Porter currently has one year remaining on his contract<\/a>, as he’s set to earn $40.8 million for the 2027-28 season before hitting free agency in 2028.<\/p>\n

On July 6, he became eligible to sign an extension worth up to $234 million over four years (h\/t ESPN’s Bobby Marks<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Nets general manager Sean Marks confirmed that he plans to take a patient approach in extension negotiations with Porter, though.<\/p>\n

“I’m sure we’ll have those discussions,” Marks said, per Brian Lewis<\/a> of the New York Post. “I think we’ve got time. There’s no immediate hurry right now with Mike. We value him a lot. He had a terrific year last year, arguably his best year as a pro. I give him a lot of credit for that. It’s been great to see what Mike’s done for us. I look forward to having those discussions, and seeing what Mike can do the rest of the summer and the rest of the season.”<\/p>\n

Porter is coming off an impressive inaugural year in Brooklyn, averaging a career-high 24.2 points and 3.0 assists per game. He shot 46.3 percent from the field and 36.3 percent from three-point territory.<\/p>\n
