STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who is set to become thefirst Muslim leader of New York City, secured a historic win<\/a> in New York City on Tuesday, but Staten Islanders did everything they could to try to prevent that new reality.<\/p>\n

As of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, unofficial results from the New York City Board of Elections show that Mamdani has received 50.4% of the citywide vote, compared to 41.6% for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and 7.1% for Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.<\/p>\n

Voter turnout across the city surpassed two million, a benchmark that hasn\u2019t been reached in a New York City mayoral election since 1969, with 2,055,921 votes tallied thus far.<\/p>\n

On Staten Island, voter turnout reached an all-time high for a mayoral election with 148,924 votes tallied so far, even more than the roughly 137,000 votes in the 1993 mayoral election when secession was on the ballot.<\/p>\n

Mamdani prevailed in four of the city\u2019s five boroughs, besting Cuomo in Brooklyn 56.8% to 37.3%, in the Bronx 51.5% to 40.3%, in Manhattan 52.7% to 43%, and in Queens 47.3% to 42.2%.<\/p>\n

As expected, Staten Island was the only borough that Mamdani lost, but the way in which borough residents voted was much different than in past elections.<\/p>\n

Typically, the Republican nominee dominates what is known as the reddest borough. But with concerns from President Trump and other high-profile Republicans about the seriousness of Sliwa\u2019s candidacy, Staten Islanders turned out in force for Cuomo, with many Republicans viewing the former governor as the lesser of two evils between him and Mamdani.<\/p>\n

Cuomo had made winning votes on Staten Island a priority, appearing in the borough several times during the final weeks of his campaign, and those efforts seem to have borne fruit, though they were ultimately unable to impact the citywide results.<\/p>\n

The former governor received 55.4% of the vote on Staten Island, compared to 22.7% for Mamdani and 21.3% for Sliwa.<\/p>\n

In terms of total votes, Cuomo received 82,494 on Staten Island, more than both the other candidates combined, with Mamdani receiving 33,820 and Sliwa receiving 31,712.<\/p>\n

Further analysis showed that voting patterns varied in different parts of the borough, with Mamdani winning along the North Shore, while all other areas were dominated by Cuomo.<\/p>\n

In Assembly District 61, which covers the North Shore, Mamdani received 43.6% of the vote, compared to 40.9% for Cuomo and 14.5% for Sliwa.<\/p>\n

In Assembly District 62, which covers the South Shore, Mamdani earned just 11.3%, with Cuomo receiving 62.6% and Sliwa receiving 25.8%.<\/p>\n

In Assembly District 63, which covers most of Mid-Island, Mamdani received 27.8%, while Cuomo received 52.8% and Sliwa received 18.7%.<\/p>\n

In Assembly District 64, which covers the East Shore, Mamdani earned 18.7%, compared to 58.3% for Cuomo and 22.5% for Sliwa.<\/p>\n
