(WNYT) – New York officials said a July 4 enforcement push led to more than 50,000 tickets statewide, including 1,576 for impaired driving.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee said law enforcement agencies across the state issued 50,417 tickets during the mobilization from Monday, June 29, through Monday, July 5. That included 8,170 speeding tickets, 2,025 distracted driving tickets, 3,661 seat belt tickets and 408 move over tickets.

“As we all spent time celebrating America’s 250th birthday, most drivers acted responsibly when they headed home, but unfortunately, some made the irresponsible choice to drive impaired or recklessly and found out the hard way that we have zero tolerance for that in New York,” said New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Acting Commissioner Christian Jackstadt.

“I thank our law enforcement partners for their steadfast commitment to keeping our roadways as safe as possible by removing dangerous drivers,” said Jackstadt.

During the campaign, state and local officers used sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers, according to the release.

“I applaud the tremendous work put forth by our members and law enforcement partners that have attributed to the success of this enforcement. There is zero tolerance for impaired and distracted drivers on New York’s roadways, and we hope campaigns such as this will make motorists think twice before putting keys in the ignition. We will remain vigilant in intercepting and apprehending irresponsible drivers to keep our roads safe for all,” said New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. Most ended their fun days by being sober and courteous behind the wheel. Some people chose to drive impaired or aggressively and risked losing their own independence by being a danger to other road users. Law enforcement ticketed, and in some cases arrested, many of these drivers to keep the roads safe for all. The Sheriffs of New York State want you to continue enjoying summer, but in a safe way with a plan to not drive impaired,” said Figueroa.

ALBANY, N.Y.
